Luke 23:33-34?
« on: January 04, 2010, 06:24:15 PM »

I figured I'd post again. This passage, according to the NIV, Wikipedia, and a couple of other sites, are not in the earliest manuscripts. Why is this? I believe Jesus really prayed this prayer, it's not "out of place" or anything. I was just wondering why it's not in all the manuscripts. Thanks.

Lupac,

Luke 23:34 Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.  And they parted His raiment, and cast lots. (KJV)

This in red is the spurious part. This is on Authority of Professor C. Tischendorf’s notes on the readings of the two oldest Greek manuscripts: These are omitted by both th Sinaitic and the Vatican manuscripts.  This list are the dozens of interpolations made by early copyists with the aim of making all the narratives uniform

The Sinaitic Manuscript is perfect and complete and is the oldest known copy of the Scriptures, having been written (it is believed) in the year 331 A.D.

We have the whole list at this link

So Jesus didn't actually pray that prayer?

Hi Lupac,

Only the original manuscripts are the inspired Word of God, Scripture. That part was added some time later.  So we can know whether He did or did not say it.

Lupac,

You might also think about doing your own study on whether those words that are attributed to Jesus - "Father, forgive them for they know not what they do" - are consistent with much of what the rest of Scripture teaches regarding the need for repentance from sinful behavior, as well as the restitution for and judgment of sin.

Also, what do you think the following excerpt from a parable spoken by Jesus suggests regarding whether the Pharisees knew what they were doing when they killed Jesus?

Matthew 21:38  But when the tenants saw the son, they said to each other. 'This is the heir.  Come, let's kill him and take his inheritance.'  So they took him and threw him out of the vineyard and killed him.

Matthew 21:45  When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard Jesus' parables, they knew he was talking about them.

Food for thought.
