10 Types of People

Fester:

There are 10 Types of People in the world.

Those who understand binary and those who don't.

Dave in Tenn:
I graduated High School in 1974, to give you some idea when all this took place.  Back in the 8th grade--1968?--in our regular math class we were studying Base2 mathematics (as well as other Bases).  All I can remember thinking was, "How in the world is anybody ever going to use this?"  I have missed the boat too many times to count.

bpenelli:
You don't like that "one bit" do you?

Fester:
I like it "two bits" though.

Okay Dave and Fester,
I googled base 2 math, and got lost here--probably somewhere around 8th grade stuff...??

Years later, we learned that the ones column meant 10^0, the tens column meant 10^1, the hundreds column 10^2 and so on, such that

      10^2|10^1|10^0
        1 |  9 |  3

the number 193 is really {(1*10^2)+(9*10^1)+(3*10^0)}.

Can anyone explain what the carrot means?  Maybe if I get that I can move on to the next section...... ::) ::)I hope.  I can't figure out how 193 is obtained here.
