I graduated High School in 1974, to give you some idea when all this took place.  Back in the 8th grade--1968?--in our regular math class we were studying Base2 mathematics (as well as other Bases).  All I can remember thinking was, "How in the world is anybody ever going to use this?"  I have missed the boat too many times to count.

Okay Dave and Fester,
I googled base 2 math, and got lost here--probably somewhere around 8th grade stuff...??

Years later, we learned that the ones column meant 10^0, the tens column meant 10^1, the hundreds column 10^2 and so on, such that

      10^2|10^1|10^0
        1 |  9 |  3

the number 193 is really {(1*10^2)+(9*10^1)+(3*10^0)}.

Can anyone explain what the carrot means?  Maybe if I get that I can move on to the next section...... ::) ::)I hope.  I can't figure out how 193 is obtained here.

^ is called a caret (not a carrot which Bugs Bunny likes)
has a few meanings but in your instance .....
10 ^ 2 .... is 10 to the power of 2
(as in the written number 10 with a little 2 to the top right, raised slightly above the top of the 10)
it is used in places like this where superscript is not available

It also has nothing to do with understanding this riddle.

the number 193 is really {(1*10^2)+(9*10^1)+(3*10^0)}.

Now lets help Vangie.

Basically ....

(1*10^2) is 1 multiplied by 100 (10^2 is a 1 with 2 zeros)
(9*10^1) is 9 multiplied by   10 (10^1 is a 1 with 1 zero)
(3*10^0) is 3 multiplied by     1 (10^0 is a 1 with 0 zeros)

(1*10^2)+(9*10^1)+(3*10^0)
(1*100)+(9*10)+(3*1)
100+90+3
193

Note: * means multiplied by: 3*3=9 (same as 3x3=9)

Thank you Fester.  I got it when you explained the caret, but it was great to have the whole thing spelled out.  Now I know I had it right. ;)  I never understood how bases other than 10 (or okay, 12 maybe--you know, timekeeping) would come into play, but they really do.

Especially with the binary stuff.  Who knew back in the early eighties?  The Bill Gates' and the Festers' I guess.  :)

Never could win anything, unlike one of my sisters. No matter what she did she always brought something home from contest.

My weak mind fails to grasp the -insert fitting description- that is binary.
