8GB Memory-1TBHard Drive
« on: March 20, 2010, 09:33:50 AM »

Hey guys!
I sense some tect. minds in the balcony ;)
Would some of you be so kind to explain in 50 words or less :D to the untrained, what GB memory and TB hard drive numbers mean.
And how that affects what you are intending to do with your computer, and again please put that in language, if possible, that those not so blessed in that area as you, would appreciate :-[  Maybe it will take more than 50 words ;D

Thanks
Joel

Wikipedia has all the answers:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gigabyte

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terabyte

I recently bought a terabyte hard-drive for $114.00 at Bestbuy.

Back in the 80's I bought my first 10 meg hard-drive for $800.00. I thought I would never fill it up. Now a single photo can be well over 10 meg.

And that 10 MB Photo would have been emailed to me when I had a dialup connection with the heading, "You have GOT to see this!"

The more memory [aka RAM - Random Access Memory] your computer has, the faster it will run, and the more programs you can run at the same time without lag...

-->The "standard" amount of RAM today would range from 2 to 4 GB

The more hard drive space you have, the more data you can store on it.

-->The "standard" hard drive size today would range from 250 to 500 GB

***1 TB is approx. 1,000 GB***

Hey guys...if I have a problem or a question about the computer I just ask George (aqr) Trapp... My own personal computer Guru!! ha!! and sometimes I ask other people too..you know who you are!! So let me tell you there are people here who....know stuff! hehe! It's all a matter of knowing whose brain to pick for what you need!  ;D I am so tech-illiterate...my little 10 and 12 year old grandsons even have to tell me stuff! Hey...didn't I say it's all about whose brain you pick?!
Uhhh, Vangie....everyone knows that a bit is just a tiny piece!! hehehe!!  :D ;D ;) well, isn't it?

Wow Dennis that took me back to 5-1/4" floppy disks!!!
That is also a great price for a terabyte hard drive!!!
Also Joel I'm not sure any operating system now can handle 8gigs of memory.
I now for sure XP can't read over 3gigs because I have 4gigs and the system is not registering it.

Hi Joel,

GB memory - When referring to memory which is also called RAM or Random Access Memory; it is a measurement of how much memory your computer has. RAM is used by your computer to be to help open programs quickly. A easy way to determine how much you might need is simply the maximum amount your computer can hold or your pocket book will allow you to purchase.  :)

TB hard drive numbers - When referring to hard drive letters such as GB's or TB's these are letters describing measurements of space a hard drive has available for storage. Things you might store on your computer such as pictures, documents, videos or music, take up space on your hard drive in measurements of bits, bytes, kilobits, kilobytes, megabits and megabytes, leading up to bigger forms of such measurements as GB's-Gigabytes and TB's-Terabytes.

Windows Vista and Windows 7, 64-bit versions, can register that amount of memory (& more).

Only the 64-bit versions go beyond 4GB of RAM.

Personally, I'm waiting on Service Pack 1 before going to Windows 7. I use Vista Professional, Service Pack 2, and it's been working fine. The main thing with these different versions from Microsoft is making sure your existing hardware and software programs are compatible and also if they have updates to make them work better on Vista/7.

Everything works great with XP except my memory issue. I'm afraid to upgrade, not looking forward to finding updates for all my software!!

Actually OS2 Warp is much more stable than all windows operating systems, before the howl goes up, i do use Win Vista Ultimate and Win Xp Pro 32 bit, both are adequate for the type of computing of most home users.

Yes Vista and Win 7 64 bit will address more than 8GB of Ram, problem is so few programs to run on 64 bit machines and expensive too.

Antaiwan, you probably have some program/s that are leaking memory, or a failing Ram module.

Correct the problem either with a patch/fix from the program maker (You know who), or if it is a failing Ram module, just replace it with a new module (same type and size ???).

My camera does 16x9 format. One raw picture can easily be 20 meg.

The video I do at bible studies and conferences uses 8 gig an hour.
