Soberx, are you talking about the woman who washed the feet of Jesus? Mary Magdaline?

Hi Soberxp,

First there is the virgin Mary, mother of Jesus Christ. She is seen with Mary Magdalene in the Scriptures, so you can see they are 2 different women.

John 19:25  Now there stood by the cross of Jesus His mother, and His mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.

So Mary Magdaline, according to Luke 8:2 and Mark 16:9, Jesus cleansed her of "seven demons."

Luke 8:1  Soon afterward he went on through cities and villages, proclaiming and bringing the good news of the kingdom of God. And the twelve were with him,
v. 2  and also some women who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities: Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out,

She seems to be a disciple after that. She was with a group of women disciples who was present at the cross and at his burial and she was the first person to see the resurrected Christ.

Mat 27:55  There were also many women there, looking on from a distance, who had followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering to him,
v. 56  among whom were Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James and Joseph and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.

John 20:1  Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb.

Mark 16:9  Now when He rose early on the first day of the week, He appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom He had cast seven demons.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Then you have Mary of Bethany. Jesus visited the home of the two sisters, Mary and Martha. Mary is contrasted with her sister Martha, who was "cumbered about many things" (Luke 10:40) while Jesus was their guest and Mary had chosen "the better part," that of listening to what Jesus had to say.

This Mary appears in 2 places in Scriptures, first at the raising from the dead of her brother Lazarus.

John 11:1  Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha.
v. 2  It was Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was ill.

Then we come to the Scripture that you are referring to and we see it is this Mary of Bethany, as John has made it clear that the sister of Lazarus is the one that anoints the Lord's feet.

John 12:1  Six days before the Passover, Jesus therefore came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead.
v. 2  So they gave a dinner for him there. Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those reclining with him at table.
v. 3  Mary therefore took a pound of expensive ointment made from pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.

Hope this is helpful in sorting out the Marys.

mercy, peace and love
