YellowStone:
Hi Patrick,

I have used almost everything that has been suggested so far and they all work great.

I have been using Windows Defender exclusively for several months and find it great. You can download it here:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=435bfce7-da2b-4a6a-afa4-f7f14e605a0d&displaylang=en

I will mention that it is always good to have more than one application checking, just in case it misses something.

Good luck,

YellowStone

Patrick:
I just did a test using a couple of different programs. The 1st program found 3 problems; the 2nd program found 123 problems. I kept getting the pop-ups with the 1st program; have not had a pop-up for some time with the 2nd program.

I'm all for having more than one safety, but what keeps one from over-riding the other?

When it comes to PC savy, I missed the bus. ???
Thanks for all the suggestions.

And I would also recommend getting "Mozilla Firefox" instead of Internet Explorer. Just do a "Google" search for 'Mozilla Firefox' download it, and use that instead.

Hope that helps,
Sorin

Sorin,

I used moxilla firefox for awhile and I found the security excellent but I found it very slow.  Just my opinion.  The avant browser has good security (excellent combined with zone alarm) and seems to be alot faster.

Yellowstone,

That's mainly why I recommended Mozilla Firefox for it's security. It fast for me, so I don't know. It could have just been your connection/ISP.

it sounds like your browser got hijacked. this happens with I. E. all the time. you could uninstall it and download a new one which would fix the problem. but the likelyhood of that happenning again is great. or you could choose a different browser all together. a good browser like sorin said is mozilla firefox or opera is another one. both are good and secure. mozilla firefox is compatible with almost all programs out there. to me it is the most secure. with I. E. you can get rid of all the cookies and the files but it still stores information on you that you do not know about. like your I.P. address as in your computer address. you can set mozilla firefox to get get rid of every information about you and you can look to see if it is done.  hope this helps a little.

Hi dave,

some very good suggestions here,  a straightforward pop-up blocker will solve those horrible little boxes you are getting. The problem isn't so much with IE, its more to do with messenger. It's usually through this channel that you get these in the first place. Also, some freeware programs have the script for this embedded into it [which is why it is free] you may need to uninstall any freeware that, in it's terms and conditions, uses search assistants installed at the same time which hijack your browser search settings.

As far as the message telling you that others may see your info, there should be a tiny little box near the bottom and a sentence saying 'do not show this message again' click on the tiny wee box so that a tick appears in it, and you wont ever see it again, thats to do with your P.C 's security settings.

you can also empty your temp internet files after every session. when you have a browser window open, click on 'tools' at the top of the page, move cursor down to 'internet options' and click.
on the box that appears, click on the 'advanced' tab. scroll down to 'empty temporary internet files when browser is closed' click the box to the left of it so there is a tick in it, then apply it, then come out of it.

whilst mcafee and norton both have merits, both have faults too. The best antivirus software around that does not cause ANY problems or conflicts with other programs is AVG [AntiVirus Grisoft] and you can buy the fully supported version or download the free one. {as long as you install it after service pack 2 in win XP] The free is good and has sorted all viruses I or other people I know, have ever had. If you have a decent firewall [zonealarm] your I.P address should not be visible to other internet users.

The single most important thing you can do is update your OS with all the latest service packs for both windows AND IE which contain all the latest 'plugs' for security holes. I presume you know how to do this, though if you need help, let me know.

Quite a lot to digest and sort out here for anyone unused to dealing with this, but do-able nonetheless.
hope this helps somewhat

Angie
