I want that puppy

I want that puppy

A farmer had some puppies he needed to sell.
He painted a sign advertising the 4 pups and
set about nailing it to a post on the edge of
his yard. As he was driving the last nail into the
post, he felt a tug on his overalls. He looked
down into the eyes of a little boy.

"Mister," he said, "I want to buy one of your
puppies."

"Well," said the farmer, as he rubbed the sweat
off the back of his neck, "These puppies come
from fine parents and cost a good deal of money."

The boy dropped his head for a moment. Then
reaching deep into his pocket, he pulled out a
handful of change and held it up to the farmer.

"I've got thirty-nine cents. Is that enough to take
a look?"

"Sure," said the farmer. And with that he let out
a whistle. "Here, Dolly!" he called.

Out from the doghouse and down the ramp ran
Dolly followed by four little balls of fur.

The little boy pressed his face against the chain
link fence. His eyes danced with delight. As the
dogs made their way to the fence, the little boy
noticed something else stirring inside the doghouse.

Slowly another little ball appeared, this one noticeably
smaller. Down the ramp it slid. Then in a somewhat
awkward manner, the little pup began hobbling toward
the others, doing its best to catch up...

"I want that one," the little boy said, pointing to the
runt. The farmer knelt down at the boy's side and said,
"Son, you don't want that puppy. He will never be able
to run and play with you like these other dogs would."
With that the little boy stepped back from the fence,
reached down, and began rolling up one leg of his
trousers.

In doing so he revealed a steel brace running down
both sides of his leg attaching itself to a specially made
shoe.

Looking back up at the farmer, he said, "You see sir,
I don't run too well myself, and he will need someone
who understands." With tears in his eyes, the farmer
reached down and picked up the little pup.

Holding it carefully he handed it to the little boy.
"How much?" asked the little boy... "No charge,"
answered the farmer, "There's no charge for love."

?  What??. . . .I don't get it.  Why was it free?  Was it one of those things that turns into a grimmlin?  What?  You know, don't give it water or feed it after midnight?  What is the point here?  We need a punch line.

[Ninny]

Musicman! Have you no compassion for crippled puppies?! The moral of this story is everyone needs love and understanding!! Even grumpy, overworked, little appreciated, frustrated music teachers!! I can't think of any more printable adjectives!!!
Kathy

[musicman]

Crippled puppies???   Who caused it to be crippled?  The owner?  Oh I get it, the guy was so mad that he wouldn't be able to make a profit on a runt that he kicked it.  That must have been why it was crippled.  That heartless man.  And those were crocodile tears.  He kicked it and then felt bad about it.  Someone should report him.  But not that kid.  And how dare that kid mock that crippled puppy by taking it.  He'll probably show it to his friends so that they can laugh at it.  I am so sick of mean spirited children.

[musicman]

But if it turned into a grimmlin it could get sweet revenge.

[darren]

I agree Janine. The runts turn out to be great. Thanks Arion great post. I have a pup born with a club foot. He gets around just fine.

See, Musicman? other people got it! you are so cynical! but, hey, maybe the farmer used to be a VP in the Miami/Dade School district? Maybe you knew him? hahaha!! We won't go there.......
cheer up dude...it COULD have been a gremlin...you never know!!! hehehehe!!
Kathy

[grapehound]

Careful there Janine, you almost complimented him.
It can also mean to be 'fascinating' !

[Ninny]

Hahahaha!! Well, we could say..."Musicman was so arrestable, the police couldn't help but arrest him!" He is arrestable, too in the sense of fascinating...you should see how little critters follow him around! and little children..they find him fascinating! And well, I won't mention about the ahem...women... ha!! You know the only reason I say so many things to him here is because I promised his mom I'd watch after him and keep him out of trouble...don't tell him I said that and don't tell her that I don't do a very good job keeping him out of trouble...half the time I contribute to his delinquency, but hey...I've already said too much!!

Don't worry Janine !
I'm still getting used to you guys spelling Behoves - Behooves !!
(same pronunciation!)

[musicman]

The critics of literary genius have pulled my sequal to this tragedy "Puppy's Revenge".  "Rage of The Puppy" will be on the shelf very soon.  Read it, if you dare.

[Ninny]

I say, old chap...I never KNEW the word was actually behove very funny...spell check changes that word to behoove....and the online dictionary says that behove is the English variant of behoove...oh..my! Now you've got me seriously confused!! (the longer you're here, the more you will realize that I am easily confused! and amused! ha!)
musicman......ummm..never mind...

I think you're rather taking liberties there, old sport.
Behooves is the American "Variant" of Behoves !
But I think the real corker, old bean, is that every ghastly 'spoilchekka '
on the planet changes the original to Colonial ! What a wheeze!!

Well chaps, orf to teach the pale a thing or two, so no more of your wizard pranks with Old Blighty's mother tongue.

Abyssinia,
and if the bed breaks, I'll see you through the spring.

ps. when I spellchecked this post, only 'spoilchekka' was highlighted !
so well done Brother Dennis for such a comprehensive site !

[Ninny]

ha! Ya made me laugh, Grape!! hehehe!! you are just a funny guy!
Kathy
Attention: Dave Gater...can you interpret this for me??? hehehehehehe!!

[grapehound]

Hi Kathy!,

F.Y.I.

Blighty is a British English slang term for Britain, deriving from the Hindustani word vilāyatī (विलायती) (pronounced bilāti in many Indian dialects and languages) meaning a foreigner, a word which itself is derived from the Arabic word wilayat, meaning a kingdom or ministry.

"The pale" as in "He's beyond the pale", meaning 'He's gone too far' refers to when the Britsh Empire was coloured (not colored!) pink (pale), on the old maps.
When a man was beyond the pale, he was out of reach, not under the Crown's jurisdiction.

Hope that helps some.

Luv ya,
Grape x
