can someone please explain: Genesis 16:10
"Then the angel of the Lord said to her (Hagar), [I will multiply your descendants exceedingly, so that they shall NOT be counted for multitude] Is this to do with Ishmael's descendants only?

whereas in speaking to Abraham, Gen. 13:16?  "and I will make your descendants as the dust of the earth; so that if a man could number the dust of the earth, then your descendants also could be numbered."

Then, if I remember, was it not a sin to take a census?
  What does this all mean?

Just an FYI, it's not a sin to take a census. God had Moses & Aaron take one that was recorded in Numbers [Num Chapter 1].

It was a sin for David because he was not commanded to do so. God required faith from David to trust in the Lord, not in the number of his army.

Looking at it from God's promise to bless someone, God does things in a big way!
The stars of heaven
Sands of the sea
Opening the windows of heaven
My cup runneth over
Joy unspeakable and full of glory
Jesus demonstrated this with the excess bread and fish that were left over when he fed the multitudes, examples in scripture go on and on. :)
