--- Quote from: Samson on April 27, 2011, 12:06:01 AM ---Mat 24:42  Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.
Mat 24:43  But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up.

Mar 13:33  Take ye heed, watch and pray: for ye know not when the time is.
Mar 13:34  For the Son of man is as a man taking a far journey, who left his house, and gave authority to his servants, and to every man his work, and commanded the porter to watch.
Mar 13:35  Watch ye therefore: for ye know not when the master of the house cometh, at even, or at midnight, or at the cockcrowing, or in the morning:
Mar 13:36  Lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping.
Mar 13:37  And what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch.

--- End quote ---

this may be a stupid question but, what are we supposed to watch (physically/spiritually)? the church says watch out for physical signs like natural disasters, people who claim to be Jesus, 666 tattoo on someone's forehead or arms or whatever... we know those church teachings are false.
so what are we supposed to watch? we can't stay alert until we know what to watch, right? if we know the truth, does that mean we are already staying alert? ???

Hi Zvezda,

I found a few Scriptures that I think indicate what this "watch" is talking about. These verses are from the English Standard Version.

Luke 21:34  "But watch yourselves lest your hearts be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and cares of this life, and that day come upon you suddenly like a trap.

2John 1:5  And now I ask you, dear lady--not as though I were writing you a new commandment, but the one we have had from the beginning--that we love one another.
v. 6  And this is love, that we walk according to his commandments; this is the commandment, just as you have heard from the beginning, so that you should walk in it.
v. 7  For many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who do not confess the coming of Jesus Christ in the flesh. Such a one is the deceiver and the antichrist.
v. 8  Watch yourselves, so that you may not lose what we have worked for, but may win a full reward.
v. 9  Everyone who goes on ahead and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God. Whoever abides in the teaching has both the Father and the Son.

1Tim 4:13  Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation, to teaching.
v. 14  Do not neglect the gift you have, which was given you by prophecy when the council of elders laid their hands on you.
v. 15  Practice these things, immerse yourself in them, so that all may see your progress.
v. 16  Keep a close watch on yourself and on the teaching. Persist in this, for by so doing you will save both yourself and your hearers.

Gal 6:1  Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted.

mercy, peace and love

Hi Abednego,

I get a real sense of joy when I can find Scripture to help someone with a question. But it is great help to my own understanding to search out these things as well.

The following Scriptures are a compliment to Kat's Post in keeping with Your question as to staying alert & what are we supposed to do, what we are supposed to avoid. The people of the World are always looking & searching for physical signs or manifestations, especially Food Shortages or Famine, Earthquakes, Disease or Pestilence & Wars, etc. Different periods of time since the First Century have experienced these things to a large degree, the 12th Century comes to mind. Anyway, before Jesus mentions these conditions at Matthew Chapter 24, He cautions us with the following. (Read Below).

Mat 24:4  And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you.
Mat 24:5  For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.
Mat 24:6  And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.

Luk 21:8  And he said, Take heed that ye be not deceived: for many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and the time draweth near: go ye not therefore after them.
Luk 21:9  But when ye shall hear of wars and commotions, be not terrified: for these things must first come to pass; but the end is not by and by.

Below are the Scriptures that tie into Kat's train of thought, not completely, but these Scriptures about what our mind set should be & state of individual affairs. ( Read Below).

Luk 17:26  And as it was in the days of Noe, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man.
Luk 17:27  They did eat, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, and the flood came, and destroyed them all.
Luk 17:28  Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot; they did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded;
Luk 17:29  But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all.
Luk 17:30  Even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man is revealed.
Luk 17:31  In that day, he which shall be upon the housetop, and his stuff in the house, let him not come down to take it away: and he that is in the field, let him likewise not return back.
Luk 17:32  Remember Lot's wife.
Luk 17:33  Whosoever shall seek to save his life shall lose it; and whosoever shall lose his life shall preserve it.

Mat 24:37  But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
Mat 24:38  For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark,
Mat 24:39  And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
2Pe 3:3  Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts,
2Pe 3:4  And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.
2Pe 3:5  For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water:
2Pe 3:6  Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished:
2Pe 3:7  But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.

The above Scriptures seem to indicate that People were going about their daily state of affairs, Eating, Drinking, Men Marrying, Women being given in Marriage, Planting, Building, buying, selling. The regular everyday cares & anxieties of Life, but they took no note or were not paying attention or being watchful, each individually with their personal lives & families. Hence the passage at Matthew chapter 6 may benefit all of us individually considering "Staying Alert' & Watchful. (Read Below)

Mat 6:31  Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?
Mat 6:32  (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.
Mat 6:33  But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
Mat 6:34  Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

                         Hope this Helps, Samson.
