Interesting facts about Luke and the Book of Luke
« on: January 30, 2012, 08:57:56 PM »

This was studied from the New King James Version:

Interesting facts about the Book of Luke (from NKJV intro.)
Personally:
* Luke never met Jesus--yet chose "to follow"
* Luke was a Gentile -while the disciples were Jews
* Luke was a physician--therefore recorded extensively about healing illnesses.
* Luke's favorite term for Jesus was: "Son of Man".
* Luke being educated wrote some of the book in "high Greek" style.

As the "Book of Luke":
* is the only book of the Bible written to an individual (Theophilus)
* is the longest of the four gospels
* has no record of WHO wrote it, WHERE or WHEN (assumed 62 A.D. but
before fall and destruction of Jerusalem in 72 A.D.)
* is the only gospel that has a sequel (Acts)
* was EITHER the second or third gospel written (scholars disagree over whether Matthew or Mark was written first.)
* has no sub-title
* has the most complete account of Jesus's ministry
* centers on God's plan to provide "salvation to the world"

Thanks for those highlight facts Duane, I'll have to check it out, but I think that Luke was a close associate of Paul's too.

The Greek name “Luke” appears only three times in the New Testament:
Colossians 4:14
2 Timothy 4:1
Philemon 24.

Luke was not one of the 12 apostles.

Luke’s emphasis on chronological and historical accuracy makes it more comprehensive than Matthew, Mark, or John.

Luke traces Jesus’ ancestry all the way back to Adam.

The first thirty years of Jesus’ life is summed up in one verse, Luke 2:52 - “And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.”

Luke was either a Hellenistic Jew or a Gentile. It is more likely that he was a gentile. In Colossians 4:10-14, Paul lists three fellow workers who are “of the circumcision” (Jews) (vs. 10-11) and then
includes Luke’s name with two Gentiles (vs, 12-14).

"Christianity began as a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. When it went to Athens, it became a philosophy. When it went to Rome, it became an organization. When it went to Europe, it became a culture. When it came to America, it became a business."

Fester--you are right on----.
My synopsis was taken right out of the NKJV intro to Luke.  Nothing exotic.
