To Vote or Not to Vote??
arion:
This goes against the 'wisdom' of the church but if God is sovereign in his creation [He is], if God is the one who puts Kings and elected officials into power and then in his timing takes them out of power [He does] then does it really matter who we would vote for? I was in the military for 15 years and took an oath to support, preserve and protect. As a believer in Christ and as one who must support the constitution when it doesn't counter Christ's teachings I can't vote for a man/woman who I know will use that constitution like a roll of toilet paper. Since I know of none who will take their oath seriously I won't be voting for them. I hear the lessor of two evils argument all the time but as I say back to them I can't vote for any evil....period.
Kat:
You hear so much about the 'right' to vote. I feel it is my right to turn my back on the mayhem that we call government and reject being any part of it.

p.s. That word mayhem was picked deliberately. You will notice I changed the word person below.
may•hem \"ma-'hem, "ma-em\ n 1 : willful and permanent crippling, mutilation, or disfigurement of a person nation 2 : needless or willful damage (Merriam-Webster)
Dave in Tenn:
As best as I can figure, I've voted my last time already. To be honest, even if I had not come to believe in the Sovereignty of God, I was sick enough of politics (having been blown around all over the map during my life depending on the last thing I read) already.
When I stumbled onto B-T, two things I wanted to be 'saved' from were depression and cynicism. This is strictly ME talking, but I've found that I cannot be 'saved' from these while still immersing myself in politics and listening to media talking-heads. It started with about 6 years of no television. Oh, the peace that passes understanding. :D
I do want to slip in a reminder, though. This forum is not exclusively American or western. There are people in other countries who have a far greater struggle living 'in the world' where God has them than any of us living in democracies, including the USA. IN THE LONG RUN, we (citizens of democratic countries, with all things considered) tend to get what we deserve. I'm not sure I can say the same thing about others.
Joel:
I have never voted. Thought about it and came close a couple times years ago.
Couldn't ever make the steps necessary to get to the poles on election day.
I was happy to hear what Ray said about voting, and feel he was spot on in his views concerning the carnal governments of the world.
I have people in the family, and at work that get wrapped up with the elections and the different candidates. God has his government and it is Spiritual, and I need to be more concerned with that aspect of LIFE.
Jesus Christ is the KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS. The Jews voted before Jesus was crucified saying, "We have no king but Caesar."
I've been told that God expects us to vote so he can have the person he wants in office. What a joke. :o
Jesus said in Matthew 12:25 "Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand:"

Hey Gene,
I posted already (tsk tsk) but I feel compelled to post this (btw, great replies everyone!). This goes hand in hand with what Dave said about getting "what we deserve."
1 Samuel 8
English Standard Version
Israel Demands a King
1 When Samuel became old, he made his sons judges over Israel.
2 The name of his firstborn son was Joel, and the name of his second, Abijah; they were judges in
Beersheba.
3 Yet his sons did not walk in his ways but turned aside after gain. They took bribes and perverted
justice.
4 Then all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah
5 and said to him, “Behold, you are old and your sons do not walk in your ways.
Now appoint for us a king to judge us like all the nations.”
6 But the thing displeased Samuel when they said, “Give us a king to judge us.” And Samuel
prayed to the Lord.
7 And the Lord said to Samuel, “Obey the voice of the people in all that they say to you, for
they have not rejected you, but they have rejected me from being king over them.
8 According to all the deeds that they have done, from the day I brought them up out of Egypt
even to this day, forsaking me and serving other gods, so they are also doing to you.
9 Now then, obey their voice; only you shall solemnly warn them and show them the ways of
the king who shall reign over them.”
Samuel’s Warning Against Kings
10 So Samuel told all the words of the Lord to the people who were asking for a king from him.
11 He said, “These will be the ways of the king who will reign over you: he will take your
sons and appoint them to his chariots and to be his horsemen and to run before his chariots.
12 And he will appoint for himself commanders of thousands and commanders of fifties, and some
to plow his ground and to reap his harvest, and to make his implements of war and the
equipment of his chariots.
13 He will take your daughters to be perfumers and cooks and bakers.
14 He will take the best of your fields and vineyards and olive orchards and give them
to his servants.
15 He will take the tenth of your grain and of your vineyards and give it to his officers
and to his servants.
16 He will take your male servants and female servants and the best of your young mena
and your donkeys, and put them to his work.
17 He will take the tenth of your flocks, and you shall be his slaves.
18 And in that day you will cry out because of your king [sound familar?], whom you
have chosen for yourselves, but the Lord will not answer you in that day.”
The Lord Grants Israel’s Request
19 But the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel. And they said, “No! But there shall be a king over us,
20 that we also may be like all the nations, and that our king may judge us
and go out before us and fight our battles.”
21 And when Samuel had heard all the words of the people, he repeated them in the ears
of the Lord.
22 And the Lord said to Samuel, “Obey their voice and make them a king.” Samuel then said to
the men of Israel, “Go every man to his city.”
And the rest is history.
