What is prayer all about?

John from Kentucky:

--- End quote ---

I do not know.

Faith is belief.  All prayers are prayers of faith because to pray to God you must believe that He exists and is the Sovereign God and He hears and answers all prayer according to His will, not our own will.

Good question. I did a look on that verse; and that word is not the usual word for "Prayer". Its used only 3 times (i believe), and it's translated VOW 2 other times. maybe that's important??? "vow of prayer"

Ian 155:
Yeh fits with what John said to Pray without ceasing

gmik:
When do thoughts become a "prayer"?  How do you know its not just rambling synapses in the brain?  Do you have to formally say "dear" jesus, heavenly father or whatever, to officially count?

A kabillion people are "thinking" prayers that are all just in their head. We are all praying for world peace or healings or riches yet, yet, not getting answered.  2 teams playing a sport, both sides have christians "praying"-

It is ALL Gods' Will---our thoughts just make US feel better or like we are actually doing something to help someone

obviously I am having trouble w/ all this---I do like the worship/prayer greek meaning being so similar..helps me understand Paul telling us to pray w/o ceasing when that is impossible to do!!

I like the idea of living my life AS THE prayer...I don't need to bless my veggies before i eat cuz i am always greatful to God for His blessings...I trust Him and His plan so I don't beg/think thoughts about it...well, that is what i am working on anyway.....thanks for letting me get this out in print...if you take it off i understand i guess...as usual i am trying to let rays' work guide me thru this

No worries, Gena.  Grant it, not every thought is inspired by the Holy Spirit.  :)

--- Quote ---http://forums.bible-truths.com/index.php/topic,3720.msg116701.html#msg116701:

It’s not wrong to say ‘grace’ or whatever. But I don’t bow my head and say these vocal prayers out loud when I eat a sandwich. I’m always thankful for what I have. I’m always praying, all day every day. There isn’t a day goes by that I don’t pray 50-60 times or 70-80 times, I just pray. My thoughts are prayers, my meditation is prayers, I just think like God is there, that’s the way that I think, .

I’ve told you that God is Spirit, He’s everywhere. He’s not sitting up there on a throne where you have to raise your voice so He hears you. So if you are praying silently… like I put in that paper that I wrote on prayer, ‘Praying by God’s Rules,’ I pray myself to sleep virtually every night of my life. That’s how I go to sleep, I don’t count sheep, I pray myself to sleep.

Last night I’m praying about today, praying about what I should talk about. You know, ‘help me give these people something worthy to take back home with them, so they will be really glad that they came and feel that they profited spiritually.’ I just pray about that and I pray about it and prayer goes into meditation and meditation goes back into prayer and pretty soon I’m asleep. Then I wake up and I don’t remember when I fell asleep, but all I know is I prayed myself to sleep.

Matt: 6:7-15  But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.  Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.  Pray then like this [in other words, this is HOW we are to pray--meaning, this must be our mindset and the place from where we are coming in our hearts when we do pray; Jesus isn't laying down the precise wording we are to use when we pray.]:

“Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name.

Your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.

For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

Jesus said:  And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.  Matt 21:22

Admittedly, I don't quite have that one figured out yet, but my humble opinion which may not be worth a hill of beans (or enough for a cup of coffee, Craig? ;) ) is this:  In order to really believe you're going to get from God what you're asking for it has to be with the understanding that we are praying for what ACCORDS WITH GOD'S WILL, we aren't to be praying in anger (or against someone); and we must be honest and realize  that whatever we may be asking for we may not get it instantaneously as we were once led to believe.

I really hope that helps.  I didn't mean to mislead anyone about thoughts equaling prayers.
