What is prayer all about?

--- Quote from: Dave in Tenn on August 22, 2012, 11:33:59 AM ---
There are a number of things I don't do or say that are 'commanded' because these things are not true of me yet. Top most is that I don't say I love the Lord my God with all my heart, soul, and mind. Because I don't. But I shall. That's not 'double-minded'. That's faith and truth. Whatever your position, own it.

Dave, I appreciate what you've written here. They're a sort of salve for my soul. If he appreciates honesty he'll find it in your heart since that's where these words came from. Nothing prententious in your words. Sounds like you own your position.

Here is something I am coming to realize: Suppose three and a half years ago when I was told that my cancer was terminal, that we all prayed and God miraculously healed me, what would I have done? Well, I would have THANKED GOD, THANKED GOD! And I would have pretty much gone back to the same way of living and eating (except for a few dramatic changes, maybe) that I practiced before I came down with cancer. But what if God is leading me and showing me something diametrically opposed to the medical profession and even involving a quantum leap from how most naturalists and naturopaths treat cancer? Now that would be something that could be passed on the many thousands of people by means of our bible-truths site, that would be of more practical benefit to many people even above just adding another miracle to our reader's faith. Miracles are great! Miracles are fun! I like miracles! But there were thousands of people who witnessed the miracles of Jesus, but did not have their lives changed or improved dramatically. Presently I am trusting God that He is going to see me through this nightmare, but maybe in a way that will have a greater benefit for our readers than just being privy to a miracle. I hope that all of you will have the same faith with me. I will inform everyone when I get the date next week for my surgery.
God be with you all,
Ray
Joel:
I'm looking at prayer in this light;
According to Isaiah 9:6 One of the Lord's names is COUNSELLOR, prayer is me asking God for his advice among other things. Including praise, thanksgiving, worship, and a host of other things.
If God tells me something and I don't do it, his advice to me was in vain. How many people go to lawyers, psychiatrist, and physicians, spending lots of money and don't do what they are instructed to do? I have a book full of instructions from God.
I am guilty of not praying enough, probally because the answers I might get wouldn't be to my liking.
That's where being lead of the Spirit and staying close to God in prayer is needfull in my life.
Proverbs 11:14 Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.
I know that Jesus prayed constantly, the early Church prayed as individuals, and as a group. They even sought answers from God by casting lots. ( Acts 1:26 )
