Spiritual Gifts

As I was skimming through a blog written by Frank Viola, (author of Pagan Christianity, etc.), this following sentence stood out to me as a golden nugget of truth:
..."Gifts are called “spiritual” simply because they come from the Holy Spirit, not because the recipients are spiritual people...".  Some biblical examples given, were: Samson, Saul, & Balaam. 
My immediate thought was that the "Established Religious" folks may not agree.
