I worked briefly for one such "charity" which raised money by selling tickets to some kind of dinner.  I didn't work in the boiler room, though I saw it and had a sense of what went on.  I worked delivering the tickets on a per-delivery basis.  I hung in there for about three days.  On the best day, I made 10.00 and spent about 8.00 on gas.  I didn't even bother to quit...just didn't show up any more after that.  Just the sales commissions and the measly bit I got for making the delivery were about 80% of the the money raised, not counting the cost of running the office.  Best I remember, it was the Sheriff's Deputies Association.  Barney Fife never saw a penny of that, I'm sure.

There are good charities, however.  A look along the left side of that page gives resources for sussing them out.
