Good find Walt. This is your answer right out of the bible.

(CLV) Because there is no sentence executed quickly against the evil deed, Therefore the heart of the sons of humanity in them is fully given to do evil."

(JPS)  Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil;

(KJV)  Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil.

(Rotherham) Because sentence against a wicked work is not executed speedily—on this account, the heart of the sons of men is fully set within them, to commit wickedness.

lareli:
Ask him why he stole. If it was to buy his kid diapers or to put food on the table then I'd feel pretty bad for firing him... If it was so he could just have something that didn't belong to him then I wouldn't feel bad for firing him.

Didn't David take what didn't belong to him when he was on the run from Saul and hungry, so he ate the temple offering that he wasn't allowed to? And didn't Jesus use this story when confronting the Pharisees about Him and his disciples picking grain on the sabbath?

Get to the heart of the matter and make a righteous judgement.

Dave in Tenn:
Like a lot of scripture, I see this one as a piece of information, not as a commandment.  Certainly council him, and be prepared to fire him...but do what is in your heart to do.  You won't do an unrepentant person any good by failing to discipline him, but you may find that 'third way' and gain a brother.  You won't know until you try.

Duane:
I guess I am more direct:

"John I have noticed that your work is above average.  I admire that.  Because of your hard work, I was on the verge of giving you a raise.  However, I have proof that you have been stealing form me--WHAT'S THE STORY??

Next:  What would YOU DO if you were in MY SHOES and the table was reversed?

Next:  If you think I should give you another chance--with the promise of re-paying me--HOW will your repay me--extra hours of free labor or out of your paycheck?   (I hate to lose you because you are a good steady worker BUT CAN I TRUST YOU FROM NOW ON??)
