Selling Salvation
« on: August 02, 2006, 05:26:01 PM »

 Dear Ray

You say in your The Lake of Fire Part VIII  ( http://bible-truths.com/lake8.html ) that 'Before the Reformation, it was thought that one could practically "buy" one’s salvation.'

I have often wondered about this. Is there really any evidence that this is so? Have you got any references that can back up this claim? Who thought so? Which Christians or members of the Church who had authority taught this or said this, and where?

Sincerely

Francis

Dear Francis:

I did say "practically," as the Church never really sold "salvation," but rather would sell you indulgences. See "Selling Indulgences" on any search engine, and Martin Luther's 96 Thesis on the subject. The Reformation came about partly due to the selling of indulgences by the Church.

God be with you,

Ray
