Why did Jesus calm the storm ?
« on: May 31, 2014, 03:38:50 PM »

I've been going through a rather stressful time recently and I messaged a former church friend, 'Lost my maid, my mother is losing her mind and I've finally found out that my husband has a disordered (bpd) mind. Learning the Lord's prayer too, thy will be done'

She messaged back, 'But ABOVE all this is that our GOD is a very PRESENT HELP in trouble.  When you tell HIM, "Master the tempest is raging", He is there to command the wind and the waves to be still! Trust Him to see you through this storm!'

Mark 4:35-41

On the same day, when evening had come, He said to them, “Let us cross over to the other side.”  Now when they had left the multitude, they took Him along in the boat as He was. And other little boats were also with Him. And a great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that it was already filling.  But He was in the stern, asleep on a pillow. And they awoke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?”

Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still!” And the wind ceased and there was a great calm.  But He said to them, “Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?” And they feared exceedingly, and said to one another, “Who can this be, that even the wind and the sea obey Him!”

So why did Jesus calm the storm?  Surely it wasn't so that we would count it as a promise that He would still every storm in our lives.  If the Words are spirit and life, what is the spiritual lesson for us in this age?

Spiritually, the sea is a symbol for carnal minded humanity. Revelation shows us that the sea shall be no more. WHEN God becomes all in all, the carnal minded God hating humanity will be no more..

Amen Alex...The wind and the sea roaring are spiritually symbolic of the beast within us, Loretta.

Hi Loretta,

In addition to the other replies, here is what Ray wrote in the LOF series Pt 12 "God Judges the World In A Pond":

http://bible-truths.com/lake12.html

CALMING THE RAGING WAVES OF THE SEA

What is the final outcome of a humanity that is likened to, "Raging Waves of the Sea?" Will they spew out their raging foam of hatred and wickedness forever? No, certainly not. There is a cure for every disease, a solution to every problem, a Saviour for every lost soul. The "raging waves of the sea" are not match for Him Who walks on water.

"And He arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, PEACE, BE STILL. And the wind ceased, and there was a GREAT CALM. And He said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? How is it that ye have no faith? [How is it that Christendom has NO FAITH?] And they feared exceedingly, and said one to another, What manner of Man is this, that even the WIND AND THE SEA OBEY HIM?" (Mark 4:39-41).

Has Jesus lost His touch? Do we think that Jesus no longer can make "the wind and the sea OBEY Him?"

"And the SEA gave up the dead [spiritually dead] which were in it [these spiritually dead are also called, "raging waves of the sea" who are "foaming out their own shame" Jude 13] …and they were judged every man according to their works… And whosoever was not found in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire" (Rev. 20:13 & 15).

Will these wicked "raging waves of the sea" continue foaming out their shame for ALL ETERNITY, in a place of eternal torture? Or will Jesus once again walk on the waters and cause a "GREAT CALM" to come over all humanity?

The spiritual fire in the lake of fire is a powerful, powerful remedy for the sins of humanity, and this Fire from God will work a great work on the "raging waves of the sea." There is coming a great calm on all humanity:

"And I saw as it were a SEA OF GLASS mingled with FIRE [yes, the fire of God’s spirit is a necessary part of this ‘sea of glass’]: and them that had gotten the victory over the beast, and over his image, and over his mark, and over the number of his name, stand on the sea of glass [ah, they too can now walk on water which is now smooth and calm as glass], having the harps of God"

All of the "raging and foaming" has been calmed SMOOTH AS GLASS by the fiery spirit of God. They now sing praises to God, symbolized by their harps! Jesus will yet calm the great sea of humanity. Be not deceived, the sea will yet "OBEY Him!"

I believe the crossing over is the calling out  (let us go to the "other side") They then leave the "Many" or multitude.
Once again the "old life" comes creeping back in the form of "waves" which try to consume us, cause fear, anxiety, once again - Thank God for a savior,

Nobody like trite answers Loretta when we are going through hard times. There can be peace in the midst of the storm. Where we surrender to the Lord's will. It is in these times that God chooses to change us the most, so please don't lose sight of what he wants to teach you, otherwise we go through it for nothing. Plus, it makes it easier to walk on when it's calm....You can get through this. I know it.

God bless. I just prayed for strength for you and revelation.

Tks Alex, Dean and Rene, for reminding me of this great spiritual truth. I'd read through the lof series once before, but this was my aha moment!

Yes, Ian, the old life does come creeping back in the form of 'waves' and I believe that is exactly what is happening to me right now.

Thank you Greg for your prayers and words of encouragement.  Indeed there is peace when we surrender to His will. Or is it visa-versa ?

Just had my wisdom tooth extracted, necessitated by a troublesome abscess and a locked jaw.

'Master, the tempest rages!'  8)

Thank God for a Savior and for bibletruths.

Loretta:

I am thinking of another verse that is a spiritual match for those verses you quoted. Paul wrote, "I have learned to be content in all things" (Philippians 4:11). These verses are extremely challenging for me. I grew up in a very ridged, very "things are gonna be done THIS way" type of environment, and that thinking carried over into adulthood. Now I am also faced with numerous health challenges, and the Lord is impressing this upon me like no other time. This is all very humbling, but that is what He is achieving in all of us. (Ephesians 2:10)

I just learned of the death of one of my former co-workers, from stomach cancer at the age of 66. He wasn't a believer, but he was the most naturally humorous person I have ever met. He was a big man, 6' 4" and 230 pounds of strength, and yet in less than one year from diagnosis, he was gone. Our lives are a vapor, and all of OUR trials are compared to momentary light affliction (2 Corinthians 4:17). Try to remember to be of good cheer, as will I (Mark 6:50).

Blessings.  Dean

Learning to be content in the face of health challenges, is tough.  I know this one too.  Not the stuff you will hear in churches today, but it's the truth.

But I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Phil 4:13

Tks Dean, for reminding me to be of good cheer. :)
