Question -- Spurious verses
« on: May 17, 2018, 01:37:32 PM »

Hi:

I have a question regarding two specific verses in the New Testament. They seem to be an identical match, but I only have one of them listed as "spurious":

"And in the morning, It will be foul weather to day: for the sky is red and lowering. O ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of the times? (Matthew 16:3)

"Ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky and of the earth; but how is it that ye do not discern this time?  (Luke 12:56)

I have the Matthew verse listed as "spurious", but not the verse from Luke.

Can anyone shed some insight into this situation?

Thanks...

I'm not sure I understand the question.  I don't know how "extra" passages may have made their way into manuscripts.  There are other examples of this kind of duplication.  None of them really prove anything by addition or deletion.  They just may change the way we'd read those two passages.

That's what I do with them.  That, and be extra careful not to "preach" too hard on a "spurious" passage.  😀

Heb 10:32  But you must continue to remember those earlier days, how after you were enlightened you endured a hard and painful struggle.
