History of Hell

Before the Christian doctrine of eternal punishment in hell for unbelievers, was there any such doctrine in any other religion, belief system, philosophy or ideal?

Are we able to tell at what point in history did the belief of eternal punishment spring up?

I know Ray wrote something about the Egyptian religions having a doctrine similar that made its influence to Christianity but I only vaguely remember.
