Intermittent fasting and health
« on: September 10, 2022, 08:27:04 PM »

Hi All,

Recently, I've become focused on metabolism and food as it relates to health.  I wanted to know the truth about diet and exercise.  However, getting to the truth of the matter is very difficult for several reasons:

1) The amount of information of so-called experts who claim they know but do not have the proof to back it up
2) The human body's complexity
3) The amount of food variety
4) The genetic variability that makes one person different from another

Given the above 4 items how do you find out the truth and get to the heart of the matter?

I "stumbled" upon some answers from two holistic doctors on YouTube after much research.  Dr. Sten Ekberg and Dr. Eric Berg do a phenomenal job of explaining the complexities of metabolism.

Here is the some of the misinformation that is out there:
"Breakfast is the most important meal of the day"
"Never skip a meal"
"The body goes into starvation mode when missing a day of food"
"Fat is bad for you"
"Saturated fat in particular is bad for you"

This video sums up the important points and quotes the New England Journal of Medicine landmark study on intermittent fasting.

Hi Josh,

Politics, religion and the medical and legal professions all need us to need them...OR they go out of business.
=
God made our bodies to be healthy and able to survive even in the earth's hazardous environment.
Fasting to allow the immune system to function is the easiest thing that anyone can do for themselves
Thank you for sharing the video, it is very helpful.  :)

I once saw a documentary where they were talking about the misinformation at best and at worst, the lies of the food industry. Apparently, a high carb diet like the one Americans are recommended in the food pyramid, develop metabolic syndrome, increases the risk of diabetes and possibly Alzheimer. They talked about how fats are not bad for you (obviously not talking about fats you find in something like a Big Mac) and it’s actually necessary for hormonal balance. Interestingly, proteins are needed to function, fats are needed to function, but carbs are not necessary for a human to live unlike the other two food groups, so that begs the question “why do they tell us to mostly eat something which our body doesn’t require to live and to restrict something necessary for our hormonal health?”

Here’s the documentary, it’s really interesting https://youtu.be/lBb5TFxj1S0

I saw that the link I provided was starting up many minutes in so, I edited it.

Bob, I'm glad you found the link helpful.  Yes, those industries are greedy indeed, and are only seeking their own.
Greed in health matters really frustrates me.  I think to myself, "You don't care that your misinformation kills us so long as you can make a few
extra bucks."  The great paradox is, if these same doctors would've given us health, us humans would've more greatly thrived and their paltry few bucks would've increased all the more.
"There's one who scatters and yet increases all the more.  And there's one who holds back more than is right yet it leads to poverty"

Following the new eating lifestyle has proved to be effective so far.  I've only been on it for almost two months, but I've lost 8 pounds.
Going from body fat percentage 21.5 to a little over 20.0.  So, I'm making a little progress.

Hi again Josh,
The other thing I have become aware of is how little the average mother knows about the health of their own children.
Especially true of first time mothers, even with college educations and also with high school drop outs, about the same.
The idea that we have to use the emergency room at hospital if the family doc is busy is just stupid.
$500.00 copay at hospital compared to $40.00 at doctor's office. If they can even pay that.
And all because "mothers", and fathers too of course, won't study and learn.
Same attitude as with church members not studying and saying that is what I pay the pastor to do for me.

There aren't nearly enough GP's any more, everybody wants to be a specialist and work a 40 hour week.
So why do we need them? Only because regarding human health, people are lazy and willingly ignorant.
End of rant.  ::) Bob

It is upsetting to hear so many lies about health. I have to remind myself that people's eyes are closed , weather it is about the truths in the bible or about health. We can talk to people until we're blue in the face , but unless Jesus opens their eyes there's not going to be any change. We have to let our actions speak and be silent witnesses. Then if Jesus opens someone's eye that we're close to then we should talk to them about the truths God is revealing to us. When Jesus reveals truth to us it is hard to not see others going in the same direction. God is in control .

I’m so tickled to see IF ( Intermittent Fasting ) discussed here.  I’ve done it a lot, and I feel so much better when I actually stick to my ‘window’.   No one in the history of the world ever ate like we do - morning , noon and night with snacks in between. What are we thinking ?  I don’t fast for spiritual reasons per se , but I do often dedicate a  fasting time to someone .  I ask God also to give the food I’m not eating ( and do not need !) to someone else.  That of course is not something I can do anything about- I just trust Him to work it out.
I listen to the Intermittent Fasting podcast and intermittent Fasting Stories.  Really recommend them.
I’ve often thought about bringing up food issues on bibletruths and have never done it.  Nothing I eat can fill me up the way I want it to - God made sure too much would leave us empty in the long run.

Octoberose,
You said nothing can fill you up like you want it to.
God has taken me on a long food journey weeding things out . Right now he has made me stumble upon a diet or a life style I should say. It's the carnivore diet . Since I've been on that I have felt so satiated.   I've stopped eating snacks . I feel so full and satisfied when I eat meat. The thing I really like is I don't feel like a slave to food, mostly sweets. I feel such freedom even though I'm not eating alot of variety.

Octoberose,
The Doctor's mentioned above are good, also Doctor Ken Berry  has a good youtube channel. I've learned alot from Kelly Hogen's youtube channel about a carnivore diet. Sorry, forgot to mention that.

Hi Aubrey! ( my granddaughters name- I love that ).   I have listened to podcasts on the carnivore diet but don’t know anyone personally on it.  That is so great that you love it.  How long have you been doing it ?  I know about Ken Barry but will have to look up Kelly Hogan.
We live in an age where they are demonizing animal products and want us to eat chemicals instead.  For me, if God made it and it was good enough for Jesus, then it’s plenty good enough for me !

Octoberose,
I hear alot more people named Aubrey now then when I was growing up.
I've been on the carnivore diet for almost 60 days. They say to try it for 90 days,  so that's my goal. I'm on it for healing more then weight loss. This second month I have felt some pain in my body . That will happen.  The body's healthing and getting toxins out, other then that I feel great . I have so much energy,  that's wonderful. We'll see ,I'm hoping it will be my life style diet. I was in more pain and mentally not feeling good before I started this diet. I definitely don't want to go back to that.

Octoberose,
Sorry one more thing. Before this diet i wasn't eating a bad diet. Five years ago God had me stop eating sugar. I did turn to sweeteners, healthier ones to my knowledge. I only kept a few homemade sugar free things in the house or I would of went over board .  I mostly ate a whole foods diet and very little gluten. That made it easier to switch to a carnivore diet. If someone was eating a standard America diet I think it would be harder.
