Shortages Again?
« on: September 13, 2022, 02:15:25 PM »

In January 2020 I warned of COVID shortages and there were shortages but nothing like what is about to occur next year IMO. So I feel obligated to say something once more with a few YouTube videos (there is some foul language in some of these videos).

Here is Jordan Peterson:  https://youtu.be/Um3OIf8ugjY   https://youtu.be/GdtWB8sE4q0

I believe there will be enough food here in the US if it can make it to market. But there may not be enough diesel fuel to get the food to market. There have already been diesel fuel shortages in the US.

https://youtu.be/JEKrHOX6TAw    (every third word is the F word)  https://youtu.be/Ng5c6gLHw38

The government started shutting down 30+ small refineries about two years ago leaving not many major refineries which are now running at near capacity:
https://www.reuters.com/markets/commodities/us-oil-refiners-aim-run-full-bore-spurning-recession-fears-2022-08-18/.
A shut-down at just one of these majors could start severe shortages. All trains and big-rig trucks run on diesel fuel meaning all your food has diesel fuel in its supply chain (except locally grown).

There is a diesel fuel additive called DEF that every diesel vehicle must use according to law and it's been in short supply:  https://youtu.be/t9FQLqbGMWM

Australia and China currently have very bad relations and China manufactures most of the DEF in the world. China stopped exporting DEF to Australia which have caused them big problems. Look it up if you want.

I suggest you start stockpiling some items now just in case. Example: 10 lbs of wheat flour currently costs about $3.70 at Walmart. Add yeast, water, salt and some heat and you have several loafs of bread to get you thru one or more shortages. I say this because I don't think much wheat flour will be available next year because much of the West in the US is in a drought and because of the war in the Ukraine, but don't overlook the diesel problems.

Just my opinion and I could be wrong. And as usual NO POLITICS please.

Add the railroad strike that might come Friday.  A good source on prepping on Youtube is SouthernPreppers1 channel.  He is a well meaning Christian man in the denominational sense, cares about people and puts out good information on a daily basis as to what is happening as people send in information to him.

His videos are about 19 minutes long and I think people will like him very much.  This is a link to today's video.  Take a look and see what you think.

Three of the four railroad groups have come to a settlement so probably no strike.

As of yesterday not looking too good.  Here is a snip from BNSF;

BNSF to Stop Ingate of Temperature Controlled Intermodal Units
DATE
SEP 12, 2022

As you are aware, BNSF and the other railroads continue to actively meet with labor unions to seek agreements before the cooling-off period ends this Friday, September 16, 2022. Although we have now reached tentative agreements with nine of our 12 unions, every union has to be under an agreement to avoid a strike or other job action that will impact the movement of your freight.

With the deadline quickly approaching, BNSF must take action on a small subset of certain commodities before a service interruption to ensure our customers’ freight safety and security, including temperature-sensitive shipments.

Dennis,
I like your suggestion about stocking up on essentials just in case of shortages.
One suggestion that I have actually experienced is the use of whole grains.
We bought 50 lb bags of naturally grown wheat several years ago and made our own bread by milling it at home. It stores for ten years or more in the original bag. Or with that you can just grind it up in a blender (electric or manual) and make cereal in hot water and it is more nourishing than any flour used for baking.
Also, even Quaker oat meal will store for three or four years and is twice as nourishing as white flour.
To make it more palatable for the children we added dried fruits, cinnamon etc. instead of sugar.
Bob
"Oatmeal is healthier than bread due to being gluten free, containing less sugar and having a higher percentage of fiber, protein and minerals. Oatmeal contains vitamin A which bread doesn’t contain. Oatmeal provides over 100% more potassium, phosphorus, copper, zinc and magnesium than bread."
