Gates of Hades

Nelson:
Hi folks,

Just seeking your thoughts,
"Now I, also, am saying to you that you are Peter, and on this rock will I be building My ecclesia, and the gates of the unseen shall not be prevailing against it" (Mt 16:18)[/list:u]What are the 'gates' of the unseen, or hades? Christ says that the 'gates' of the unseen shall not be prevailing against the ecclesia. Thanks brothers.

Grace and peace to you

Nelson

I do not believe that sheol is a place, nor does it have literal gates. Sheol is a state of death which is compatible to a grave (which is why people in the Bible speak of going down to sheol, and why the church believes that hell is literally inside planet earth.) There is another Jewish word for grave, but I don't remember what it is. Sorry about that. So sheol is compared to a place, but it is really the state of death which is as sleep, which is why it is compatible to the grave and often closely associated with it. What Christ means is that sheol will not prevail. The last enemy that will be destroyed is death, all death, all forms of it. And because of this, sheol will not prevail.

Hi Nelson here are my thoughts on it

Matthew 16:13-19
13 When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am? 14 And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist:  some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets. 15 He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? 16 And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. 17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. 18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.  19 And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

Now I have heard some say that Peter is the rock that Jesus will build His church upon.
What a misunderstanding of Jesus’ words.

Jesus asked “whom say ye that I am? and Peter replied “Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God
It is this revelation of who Jesus is that is the rock the church will be built upon.
For Jesus Christ is the rock of offence that they stumble on, the head stone the builders rejected, For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.

It is upon the revelation of who Jesus Christ is (the resurrection and the life) that the gates of hell shall not prevail against.

Gates are often in scripture used to represent judgment. We can see this in Deut.21:19, 22:15, Is.29:21, Amos.5:15 very clear, there are more but this should suffice enough to show that in the gate judgment is held.

What’s my point?

The point is that the church has been telling mankind that the judgments of hell will burn them in torment forever and ever. This is contrary to Jesus’ statement that the gates (judgments) of hell shall not prevail against Him.
Jesus went into hell and like Samson carried away the gates of judgment against us, He tasted the judgment of death for every man and death could not hold Him.

Prevail means to be to strong to overcome, for it is superior in strength.

Boy does the church have this wrong, they tell us that the gates (judgments) of hell prevail (overcome because they are superior in strength) to Jesus Christ. But Jesus says that the gates (judgments) of hell will not prevail for He is the one who is superior in strength and they shall NOT prevail against HIM.

And it is this overcoming of the judgment of death that is the keys of the kingdom of heaven, for He says in Rev.1:18 I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.

Brothers and sisters the keys of the kingdom of heaven are the keys of hell and of death.
And we are to use them to set free those who have for so long been in bondage to the fear of hell and of death, for in Him death is swallowed up in victory.

God bless

WOW!!! Thanks for those words. I've been struggling with the occasional fear of hell, although I don't believe in it anymore (you can check out my thread titled "HELP!!! Am I The Only One?" for details). I will try to remember your words at those times.

Amen to that!!  Great thread and great posts.  Perfect love casts out all fear.  Good to know the power that was granted to our Lord.  Very enlightening.  Shout that on the rooftops.

God bless you all,
