I have no recommendations if you want to stay in your area, but I can give you a very basic overview of most of the South.  I'm currently in Tennessee but I hope to be in Costa Rica again soon on an even more perm basis if you have any interest in even further south.  :)

We live in a small city in North Texas - it’s Hot in the summer but very reasonable the rest of the year. People are friendly . Cost of housing is much less than a big city .
