Diane, here are a few different translations with which to compare.
Deu 32:6 Do you thus repay the Lord, you foolish and senseless people? Is not He your Father Who acquired you for His own, Who made and established you [as a nation]? (Amplified Bible)
Deu 32:6 Is this what you requite to Yahweh, you decadent and unwise people? Is not He your Father Who acquired you? He Himself made you and established you. (Concordant Literal Version)
Deu 32:6 Is it Yahweh, ye thus requite, O impious people and unwise? Is not, he, thy father who begat thee? He, that made thee and established thee? (Rotherham)
Deu 32:6 To Jehovah do ye act thus, O people foolish and not wise? Is not He thy father--thy possessor? He made thee, and doth establish thee. (Youngs Literal Translation)
Personally, I think words like redeemed, bought, purchased, acquired, begat, ransomed, foreknew, predestined, created, made, love, mercy, chosen and elect are all pretty good spiritual synonyms that we can use to help us understand Deu 32:6. If we could just figure out when and where God purchased Israel in the Old Testament, we can figure out when and where God purchased us and what that means. Perhaps these parables can explain.
Mat 13:44 "The kingdom of heaven is like treasure, buried in a field, that a man found and reburied. Then in his joy he goes and sells everything he has and buys that field.
1Co 3:9 For we are God's co-workers. You are God's field, God's building.
These parables are right in line with what Ray taught, per Pamela's quote. I'm sure we can think of ways Jesus “sold” everything He had by emptying Himself of His glory to become a mortal for the express purpose of dying for us, effectively buying us by His own blood.
Joh 12:23 Jesus replied to them, "The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.
Joh 12:24 "I assure you: Unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains by itself. But if it dies, it produces a large crop.
If He hadn't laid His life down, He would have remained as the only Son of God. Now because of Him, we are all Sons of God. What a great price He paid for us to be with Him in His Family. He knew us before He made us, all He needed to do was redeem us and claim us from the earth He made us from.
In my heart it rips me apart knowing I can't live up to that. I tell Him I will fail Him because I'm powerless to do otherwise. My only hope is to pray for His grace and mercy. I know that sounds a bit negative, but it's the truth as I believe I can do nothing of myself. If left to my devices without a Lord, I will return to the dust of the earth.
I don't know if this answers your question, Diane, as I have a tendency to rant too much about what, I think, are spiritual things. I do however, truly hope Jesus lives His life in us now to the end.
By the way, did you notice Deu 32:6 is part of the song of Moses?
Deu 32:44 Moses came with Joshua son of Nun and recited all the words of this song in the presence of the people.
Rev 14:3 They sang a new song before the throne and before the four living creatures and the elders, but no one could learn the song except the 144,000 who had been redeemed from the earth.
