Beatitudes

These are 8 character traits of blessed people.

This is the beginning of Christ' doctrine.

Mat 5:1  And seeing the multitudes, he went up into the mountain: and when he had sat down, his disciples came unto him:

Some things in the following discourse are directed to the disciples in particular, and others regard the multitude in general.

Mat 5:2  and he opened his mouth and taught them, saying,

He spoke with a clear and strong voice, that all the people might hear him.  About things of the greatest of importance, not to his disciples only, but the whole multitude, who were astonished, (Matt.7:28).

Mat 5:3  Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

poor= destitute, impoverished, deficient, or meager. This would be the spirit in man, (1Cor. 2:11), the self-consciousness in him.  Is not self, the natural man of 1Cor. 2:14, that receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God.  Joh 3:30  He must increase, but I must decrease.

Mat 5:4  Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

mourn= sorrowful, sad, or melancholy.  A sympathizing for the afflictions of other.  There is no scripture that says Christ laughed, but He wept, Luke 19:4, John 11:35.

Mat 5:5  Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.

meek= gentle, mild, tolerant, or patient.  Those not easily provoked, quietly submitting themselves to God.  Not weak, but gentle and submissive, with self-control.  The world advocates self-assertion, meekness is self-abasement.

Mat 5:6  Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

hunger= crave or longing;  thirst= strong desire or wish.  A passionate desire for goodness.  We understand the daily need for food and drink, to satisfy our physical needs.  We also have a daily need to fulfil ourselves spiritually.

Mat 5:7  Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.

merciful= softhearted, forgiving, compassionate, or goodwill.  We must partake of the suffering of our brothers and sisters, with sympathy.  Be compassionate and kind, even to strangers.

Mat 5:8  Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.

pure= unpolluted, true, innocent, or genuine.  Inwardly virtuous, by the indwelling of Christ.

Mat 5:9  Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called sons of God.

peacemakers= pacificator, appeaser, or mediator.  To love, desire and delight in peace.  As peacemakers we are to use our influence and wisdom, to promote harmony.

Mat 5:10  Blessed are they that have been persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

persecuted= torment, wrong, worry, hound, or torture.
The chosen are persecuted, because the doctrines of Christ are not agreeable, to the natural mind of man.  It is contrary to their selfish principles.

Mat 5:11  Blessed are ye when men shall reproach you, and persecute you, and say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.

reproach= rebuke, blame, censure, or discredit.  To bear persecution for His name's sake, is the same He Himself met with.  Rom 12:19  Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, "Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord."

Mat 5:12  Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets that were before you.

rejoice= gladden, delight, or give joy.  Mat 13:43  Then the righteous shall shine out like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears to hear, let him hear.

Mat 5:13  Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost its savor, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out and trodden under foot of men.

salt= scatter, dusting, or few.  Salt is used to season and preserve.  To much salt ruins it and not enough does not satisfy the need for it.  To lose it's savor, it becomes dull, sluggish, stupid, or foolish.  Col 4:6  Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.

I have learned so much from this study.
Hope it is a help to you too.

mercy, peace, and love

Kat, thank you for posting this study.  I particularily like the definitions to the words in your post.  Gives things a more clear understanding.

This verse you quoted seems to be very important towards the ones whose eyes are beginning to see:

(Col 4:6 LITV)  Let your word be always with grace, having been seasoned with salt, to know how you ought to answer each one.

This is an interesting verse.  We are no longer representives of our self, but a servant of God.

(Jam 3:17 LITV)  But the wisdom from above is firstly truly pure, then peaceable, forbearing, yielding, full of mercy and of good fruits, not partial and not pretended.

(Jam 3:18 LITV)  And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace for the ones making peace.

Thank you Kat, God bless,
