Aramaic
« on: October 15, 2006, 07:36:08 AM »

A reader e-mailed Ray and mentioned The Modern New Testament from the Aramaic, which has "My God, my God, for this I was kept!" (matthew 28:46). Does anybody know if this is an accurate translation?

Hi Extol,

That would be Matt 27:46.
This is all the translations I have and it can be helpful to compare them all.

KJV+ / My3450 God,2316 my3450 God,2316 why2444 hast thou forsaken1459 me?3165

Strong's
G1459
ἐγκαταλείπω
egkataleipō
eng-kat-al-i'-po
From G1722 and G2641; to leave behind in some place, that is, (in a good sense) let remain over, or (in a bad one) to desert: - forsake, leave.

MKJV / That is, My God, My God, why have You forsaken me?

ASV / that is, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?

ESV / "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"

ISV /  "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"

GNB /  "My God, my God, why did you abandon me?"

ALT /  "'My God, My God, why did You abandon Me?'"

CEV /  "My God, my God, why have you deserted me?"

BBE /  My God, my God, why are you turned away from me?

LITV / "My God, My God, why did You forsake Me?"

WNT /  "MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAST THOU FORSAKEN ME?"

YLT / `My God, my God, why didst Thou forsake me?'

Hi Arcturus,

It seems to me that Jesus is quoting this from the Psalms, so the scripture will be fulfilled.
This is Paslms 22:1 in the different Trans.

KJV+ / My God,410 my God,410 why4100 hast thou forsaken5800 me? why art thou so far7350 from helping4480, 3444

Strong's
H5800
עזב
‛âzab
aw-zab'
A primitive root; to loosen, that is, relinquish, permit, etc.: - commit self, fail, forsake, fortify, help, leave (destitute, off), refuse, X surely.

MKJV /  My God, my God, why have You forsaken me, and are far from my deliverance, and from the words of my groaning?

ASV /  My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? Why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my groaning?

ESV /  My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning?

CEV / My God, my God, why have you deserted me? Why are you so far away? Won't you listen to my groans and come to my rescue?

GNB /  My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? I have cried desperately for help, but still it does not come.
My God, my God, why are you turned away from me? why are you so far from helping me, and from the words of my crying?

LITV / My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me, and are far from My deliverance, from the words of My groaning?

YLT /  My God, my God, why hast Thou forsaken me? Far from my salvation, The words of my roaring?

BBE / My God, my God, why are you turned away from me? why are you so far from helping me, and from the words of my crying?

Hope this comparison will be helpful.

Great reply Kat :)

Your answer leaves nothing to add. :)

Other than "For this I was Kept" does not seem to align with "why have You forsaken me?"  Although, one could argue that contextually, it does.

In my opinion the "For this I was Kept" translation misses the whole point entirely.

Just my thoughts, :)
