Teachers?
« on: December 06, 2006, 10:07:59 AM »

Hey Ray,

Matthew 23:1-14: Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples: "The teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat. So you must obey them and do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach. They tie up heavy loads and put them on men's shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them....etc

In other words, the followers of Jesus should listen to the preaching of the Teachers, but never imitate their actions for they do not practice what they preach. If one of the Teachers, for example, says that a person who curses his parents should be killed; the disciples should oblige?!?!

Waiting for your reply.

Thanks in advance,
Tom

Dear Tom:

Do you not think that your question is a little ABSURD?  First, from where did you get that translation of Matt. 23:2?  I just checked 28 translations, and I didn't find "TEACHERS of the law" in one of them.  It is "The SCRIBES and the PHARISEES."  Do you have an official title in your church of either "SCRIBE" or "PHARISEE?"  If someone were to ask you to commit MURDER, that would fall under the category of doing "THEIR works," and not the works of Moses, and that is SPECIFICALLY what Jesus said they were NOT to do! Under the law of Moses it was a sin to MURDER.
