Jesus cleaning out the Temple twice?

(1/3) > >>

hillsbororiver:
In reading the different accounts of Jesus dealing with the merchants in the Temple it appears that John was speaking of a time earlier in Jesus's ministry than what was recorded in Matthew, Mark and Luke. I believe this cleansing of the Temple twice fits perfectly with how we (the temple of God) lose our first love and need to be broken down and humbled once again if we are to be counted worthy of Him.

We are cleansed when we first are called, then we fall back, when we realize this, when He decides it is our time to come out of Babylon we are cleansed (or begin the cleansing process) once again.

 John 2

 12After this he went down to Capernaum, he, and his mother, and his brethren, and his disciples: and they continued there not many days.

 13And the Jews' passover was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

 14And found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers of money sitting:

 15And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers' money, and overthrew the tables;

 16And said unto them that sold doves, Take these things hence; make not my Father's house an house of merchandise.

 17And his disciples remembered that it was written, The zeal of thine house hath eaten me up.
     (Psalm 69:9 For the zeal of thine house hath eaten me up; and the reproaches of them that reproached thee are fallen upon me.)

Matthew 21

 12And Jesus went into the temple of God, and cast out all them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves,

 13And said unto them, It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves.

 Mark 11

15And they come to Jerusalem: and Jesus went into the temple, and began to cast out them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves;

 16And would not suffer that any man should carry any vessel through the temple.

 17And he taught, saying unto them, Is it not written, My house shall be called of all nations the house of prayer? but ye have made it a den of thieves.

 18And the scribes and chief priests heard it, and sought how they might destroy him: for they feared him, because all the people was astonished at his doctrine.

 Luke 19

 45And he went into the temple, and began to cast out them that sold therein, and them that bought;

 46Saying unto them, It is written, My house is the house of prayer: but ye have made it a den of thieves.

 47And he taught daily in the temple. But the chief priests and the scribes and the chief of the people sought to destroy him,

 48And could not find what they might do: for all the people were very attentive to hear him.

Any thoughts or comments on this?

DWIGHT:
I never looked at like that before Joe, but in real life that's what happened to me and I'm sure to all of here.

Dwight,

  Sounds alot like in Revelation where Jesus is talking to the Church of Ephesus of how they broke from their first love.

  That is a good way to look at these Scriptures, I had not thought of that before.

hillsbororiver:
Hello Dwight & Anne,

I never paid much attention to the chronology of 4 Gospels account(s) of Jesus cleaning out the Temple of merchandisers, money changers, etc. I had pretty much assumed it was the same event, but if you read John it is quite evident that Jesus was beginning His ministry in John and nearing the end in Matthew, Mark & Luke.

This "falling away" and being restored theme runs through the OT and NT, I had never seen it in this scripture previously. I thought it was interesting.

His Peace and Wisdom to you,

Joe

 2 Chronicles 36

 5Jehoiakim was twenty and five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem: and he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD his God.

 6Against him came up Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and bound him in fetters, to carry him to Babylon.

 7Nebuchadnezzar also carried of the vessels of the house of the LORD to Babylon, and put them in his temple at Babylon.

 Being cluttered with the lusts and greed of this world tend to bring us to Babylon, only our Lord can purify us and bring us out.

 His Peace and Wisdom to you,

 Joe
