I think you would be right, except better word for it would correct, chastise, prune, dissipline etc.

I would also be right there with you Sorin as far as not being so healthy goes!

In my case I think He is using it as a way to humble me.

Sorin, this is a good question. I believe that God has used sickness as punishment for sin in the past, but does not necessarily do so today.

Although the Scriptures do not specifically tie sickness to the fall of man, I think a very strong argument for it can be made with the Scripture below.

Gen 3:16-19  

• 16 Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire [shall be] to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.
• 17  And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed [is] the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat [of] it all the days of thy life;
• 18  Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field;
• 19  In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou [art], and unto dust shalt thou return.

Below is a listing of all the uses if the word sickness in the King James. It would appear that God did punish some with sickness, but for the most part the sickness resulted by the falling of man from God. I did find an interesting discovery. The only mention of sickness in the Greek Scriptures was of Jesus Healing and NOT punishing.

This will likely be an interesting study. I look forward to the comments of others to your question.

You bring up a good point. I cannot begin to tell you how much better I am feeling health and life wise since finding the truth here at Bible Truths. My wife has been out of hospital for over 15 months after about 30 extended stays over 8 years. I can only attribute this to God, for there is almost (almost) no stress and worry where not long ago, our life was nothing but.

I am not saying for a moment that we are any better than anyone else, just what has happened to us.

I'm thinking the answer might be in these verses. 

Rom 7:18  For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.

Rom 7:20  Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.

Rom 7:22  For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:

Rom 7:23  But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.

Rom 7:25  I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.

Rom 8:10  And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.

Our flesh, our bodies (dust plus spirit=soul) is where sin resides.  The wages of sin is death.  Our bodies/soul will suffer death, sickness because of sin.  But thank God, our inward mind, the mind of Christ is renewed day by day.

God using sickness to punish sin, still assumes that God is reacting to our actions.

Sickness is one of God's tools He uses to educate us through his chastising. 

Perhaps one could say, sickness is a set consequence to help us to LEARN to stir clear of certain actions.

I believe that God uses everything to mold us into his image. He uses what I need. What I need might not be what everyone else needs. What I need might change according to what he is working on in me. I've had fiery trials of all different shapes and sizes. I know that all of it is just what I need. I am learning obedience through suffering. The lessons get harder and harder.

Many of the posts above explain some of the scriptural  reasons that you may be suffering illness, but because of sin is not one of them.

Jhn 9:2  And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind?


 Jhn 9:3  Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.


Illness can allow the works of God to be manifest in you. Not always necesarily by healing only. Sometimes having other people witness the way that a person handles sickness will display an inner strength in them that comes from God, thus glorifying God.

I will pray for you sorin, that it is God's will that you receive His strength and healing of the diss- ease that you are suffering at this time.

I'm thinking there is a difference between committing sins (the fruits of Sin), and Sin.  I think sickness is because of Sin, the body of death, in our members.  All flesh has to die, and this is due to illness/sickness.

    Who makes people sick God or satan?  Preachers say God is all powerful but then give satan all the credit when something bad happens.
