The Most Memorable Poker Game
« on: February 27, 2007, 04:27:42 AM »

To All,

I have found a new favorite past time.  That is to play poker with my neighbors and friends with poker chips of course.  No money involved, just dignity when I manage to lose 5500 poker chips in the "all in" hand.

In the midst of the poker game, David had put our precious one down to sleep.  IN the middle of silence, while shuffling the deck for the next hand, we all heard distinctly a sweet voice cry out "Momma."  With my heart in my mouth, I hurried back to him, and there he was in his radiant glory of cuteness looking over his crib railing at me, arms outsteched and he began to belly laugh.  I cried at this point, and picked him up.

I of course made a Very big deal of this, and the neighbor and my husband rejoiced in this.  My son is so amazing and hopefully one of these days we may add on to the Moynihan-Flippin family again.

I wanted to add this, becuase in all of that utterance of the one word, these last few days were made right, and all is okay.

Life is Good and Good enough is more than enough for me.  With David-Lee thrown in, life is heavenly.  What a blessing children are.  How good God is.

And on this note, I must bid my adius for the night.

  Sleep well all.

  Sincerely,

  Anne C. McGuire

Now teach him poker. We don't have chips but play penny poker out of the penny jar. I can beat the pants off Michael and I love it! We went to a casino once and I had a ball. It's a good thing we don't have money because I think I would like poker too much!

Me too Jennie.
Sorry, but, I won't even allow myself to play those games or go to a casino, as I would enjoy it too much and probably become addicted to it.  (My mother has been and still is so addicted to gambling (in the little league ways of ...horse racing, bingo, lottery tickets, casinos, card playing, etc...) all of my life it has been around me and I've lived the poverty that comes from it.

Now I love other games (sharades, pictionary, scrabble, balderdash, bibleopoly, etc...)

Anne, when is game night?  We keep trying to no avail....

Susan,

I had completely forgotton.  Okay we need to come up with game night, but let's come up with it sometime after March.  We have come over with the sole intention of playing games, but then your mouth as well as mine and our dear hubbies get to working, much to the dismay of your very smart 8 year old, and we do anything but play games.

I would like to get together in March sometime and just shoot the breeze.  I am sure we could regale eachother with some pretty good stuff in the intervening weeks.

If anyone lives close to the Lubbock Texas area, let us know, and I would like to get together and have some fellowship with some of you all who live in this area.  That would be fun.  We could BBQ <winks at Susan> and have the time of our lives.  Maybe indulge in some "friendly" poker or some discussions over Ray's papers.  [NOTE:  Friendly means no money.  Chips are free.]

Jennie,

We have actually got an invitation stating from one of the maintenacne men that work in our apartment complex if we were playing for pennies in poker to let him know.  Our next door neighbors want in on the deal to, so that would be pretty cool.

My son will grow up knowing how to play poker, he just better not win the "all in" hand LOL if Mommy is playing.   ;)

  Sincerely,

We've stayed up till all hours playing. I , of course, always fix "poker night" food. You know, Hot wings, jalapeno cheese dip, deep-fried habaneros, brownies, fudge, etc. It is a lot of innocent fun. We always give the pennnies back at the end of the evening or morning , whenever it finally ends. Back in the day we would of course have a bar set up too! Now we're somewhat "grown-up" and "reformed" so the bar is gone. I don't count beer though!!!!

Jennie,

Well if you are ever down here in the boondocks of West Texas, you certainly are more than welcome to come by and bring some of your poker munchies.  You seem to have great meals for every ocassion in mind.  I wonder if you have ever put together a cookbook or a meal planner together, if you ever publish it, I will buy it in a heartbeat.   :D

  Sincerely,

Gena,

Now that was funny.  I am trying to laugh in my hand not to wake up the precious bundle, I do not want to hear my name cried out in frustration at being woke up.  Godly ladies playing poker, I about fell of my chair imagining the preacher, Jonathan Edwards rolling over in his grave LOL at us.

Yes you are right, I have found something sweeter than chocholate and not bad for you at all, it is my little one's "Hi Momma" or something like Mooooommmmm when he cries out for me in the morning.  Ahhh, the joys of parenthood, and to think I was afraid of them.

  Sincerely,

Anne,
Yes, the joys of parenthood ;D.  (And to think that my son's first word was..."GIT" (AKA..."GET" OUT OF THE WAY SADIE"...)  I had about tripped over our Bassett Hound/low rider who was under my feet while carrying Daniel in my arms and the silly dog made me almost trip with him and I yelled out "get out of the way Sadie!"..."...  and Daniel at about 5 or so months old said 'Git", and I could hardly believe it!)  His second word was "daddy", then the third word was finally "mama". :D

Ya'll know that picture of those hounds playing poker? Maybe we should re-do it as "godly" women playing poker. What you think????

Anne, you know us old southern girls learn to cook standing on a chair facing the stove with our Grannies telling us how to do. I have a couple of cookbooks I might look at one or twice a year. My daughter will ask me what to write down so she can make something I cook. She fusses all the time because I don't measure and all.... I just cook! I'm trying to do better now and be concious of how much of whatever I am putting in something so she can duplicate it. She wasn't raised up as country as me. I wanted her to get to be a kid, be a cheerleader, ballerina, girl scout and all the other things that go with childhood. I wanted her to be free to have company over and just enjoy her friends. I did teach her to cook with me as her schedule allowed. Anytime you are gonna have a poker night or anything else and want to know what I fix I'll be glad to share it with you. Just keep that little one away from the hottest peppers if you fix those. I had a paper cut on one of my fingers once when I was stuffing and frying them and they just ate my hands up. Michael liked them though!

Now that would be hilarious Jennie!  I remember those old poker playing muts!  They were quite ugly too with cigars hanging out of their mouths and all....just as long as you and Anne don't have those fat cigars hanging out of your mouths! ;) ;D ;D
