Spiritual Gifts
« on: April 16, 2007, 10:28:46 AM »

Hi everyone,

I was just wondering about something.  Does being creative (like painting, drawing etc.) contributes to a spiritual gift from God?

I have always had an interest in art and was wondering if God gave me this gift for a purpose?

This also reminds me of a verse in the Bible (I can't remember which one) but it is about the farmer who had three sons and he gave them each money.  The first one he gave 3 pennies, the second 2 pennies and the third just one penny.  He then told them to go and make dubble of that which he gave to them.

After a period of time passed they returned and the father asked each and everyone of them what they did with their pennies.  The first one dubbled his money and so the second but the third buried his penny.

And then the third son who burried his penny was told that he would have a hard life because he didn't go forth and used this penny.

I can't really rememberd the whole verse, but does this also refer to our spiritual gifts?

Thanks,
Doreen

Hi Doreen,

Yes, I believe that is correct.  It would be a waste to discard our God given gifts.

Peace to you, Lisa

Hi Doreen,

James 1:17  Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.

Everything that we do in this life should be to the glory of God.
All our gifts and talents are for us so that we may, in this life, use them to do something good with it.

The Parable of the Talents

Mat 25:14  "For the kingdom of heaven is like a man traveling to a far country, who called his own servants and delivered his goods to them.
v. 15  And to one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one, to each according to his own ability; and immediately he went on a journey.
v. 16  Then he who had received the five talents went and traded with them, and made another five talents.
v. 17  And likewise he who had received two gained two more also.
v. 18  But he who had received one went and dug in the ground, and hid his lord's money.
v. 19  After a long time the lord of those servants came and settled accounts with them.
v. 20  "So he who had received five talents came and brought five other talents, saying, "Lord, you delivered to me five talents; look, I have gained five more talents besides them.'
v. 21  His lord said to him, "Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.'
v. 22  He also who had received two talents came and said, "Lord, you delivered to me two talents; look, I have gained two more talents besides them.'
v. 23  His lord said to him, "Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.'
v. 24  "Then he who had received the one talent came and said, "Lord, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you have not sown, and gathering where you have not scattered seed.
v. 25  And I was afraid, and went and hid your talent in the ground. Look, there you have what is yours.'
v. 26  "But his lord answered and said to him, "You wicked and lazy servant, you knew that I reap where I have not sown, and gather where I have not scattered seed.
v. 27  So you ought to have deposited my money with the bankers, and at my coming I would have received back my own with interest.
v. 28  So take the talent from him, and give it to him who has ten talents.
v. 29  "For to everyone who has, more will be given, and he will have abundance; but from him who does not have, even what he has will be taken away.
v. 30  And cast the unprofitable servant into the outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.'

It is my understanding that this parable is as Ray says, they are all the same, God making man into His image.  The last two verses of the parable speak of the judgment, where all will give account of their works in this life or how they used their gifts and talents, for good or bad.

1Co 3:13  each one's work will become clear; for the Day will declare it, because it will be revealed by fire; and the fire will test each one's work, of what sort it is.
v. 14  If anyone's work which he has built on it endures, he will receive a reward.
v. 15  If anyone's work is burned, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire.

Mat 12:35  The good man out of his good treasure brings forth good, and the evil man out of his evil treasure brings forth evil.
v. 36  I tell you, on the day of judgment men will render account for every careless word they utter;
v. 37  for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned."

I hope this helped  :)

Lisa - thank you for your reply.

Kat - thanks for your reply and quoted verse.  That was the verse I was reffering to.  I just have one last question:  If I am to understand this verse spiritually, then wouldn't it then refer to another sort of gift?  I mean, am I to take it literally of what is said in those verses - if I don't use my creativity correctly and wisely, I'll be punished for it?

Honestly, I don't know what my paintings and drawings can do to help other people etc.  There are so many painters/artists out there that I'm just trying to understand how I can make a difference.

Thanks,
Doreen

Hi Doreen,

In this life we are given various gifts, that we can use in a physical way.  Now if we don't use it, you will lose it, as you may have heard.  I believe that's what is meant in mat 25: 28 "So take the talent from him, and give it to him who has ten talents."
But I believe in judgment you will account for what you actually have done or how you lived, whether to do good or to do bad.
So people that are not among the chosen, will be judged in the white throne judgment and will give account for how they used what they were given in this life, for good or bad.  The punishment will be for the evil done, that must be purged.  But if they did good in this life, Christ will reconize it and it will remain.  All the 'good' character will build in this llife remains with us always, it is the evil that must be burned out.

It is my understanding that the spiritual gifts spoken of in scripture, are speaking to the brethren.  If we are chosen, we are given spirutual gifts and we are being judged 'now' as to how we use them.

1Co 12:1  Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be uninformed.

Eph 4:4  There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call,
v. 5  one Lord, one faith, one baptism,
v. 6  one God and Father of us all, who is above all and through all and in all.
v. 7  But grace was given to each of us according to the measure of Christ's gift.
v. 11  And His gifts were that some should be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers,
v. 12  to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ,

Hope this answered your question :)

You share a beautiful focus in what you express here Kat : It is my understanding that the spiritual gifts spoken of in scripture, are speaking to the brethren.  If we are chosen, we are given spiritual gifts and we are being judged 'now' as to how we use them.[/color]

This is a sobering and precisely scriptural view. We are all accountable! Thank you for bring this forward for us.

Peace to you

Thanks Kat.  That was really insightful and I think I'm starting to get the idea.  I've always had the urge to do something with my art.  I just couldn't and still can't really understand what to do.  I should probably pray to God and ask for help.

Thanks again, :)
