Difinition of "Hell"

This is probably way off base but I wonder if they used verbal imagery to make a point based on the natural phenomenon they were familiar with. Like for instance Pompeii. That sounds like what I would call hell- what the people saw and went through during that time. Perhaps in the old and ancient days they were familiar with similar things such as that was?

Isn't that why Jesus uses His Gehenna references? Gehenna was the trash pit outside of the city that burned day and night. That's what I've understood anyways......

When using Gehenna, wasn't Jesus always speaking to Jews - their ancestors burned their children in Gehenna, and apparantly is a Jewish burial a very important event, and to be burned at the valley of Hinnom like a criminal is an absolute insult (mmmm... read it

I think Gehenna wasn't only the site of sacrifice and insult but also the trash pit mentioned above. Thanks for the "brilliant" about imagery! I don't get that too much, not smart enough I guess.
