My Dear Watson

[hillsbororiver]

Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson goes on a camping trip. After a good dinner and a bottle of wine, they retire for the night, and go to sleep. Some hours later, Holmes wakes up and nudges his faithful friend.

'Watson, look up at the sky and tell me what you see."

I see millions and millions of stars, Holmes," replies Watson.

"And what do you deduce from that?"

Watson ponders for a minute.

"Well, astronomically, it tells me that there are millions of galaxies and potentially billions of planets.

Astrologically, I observe that Saturn is in Leo. Horologically, I deduce that the time is approximately a quarter past three.

"Meteorologically, I suspect that we will have a beautiful day tomorrow.

Theologically, I can see that God is all powerful and that we are a small and insignificant part of the universe.

What does it tell you, Holmes?"

Holmes is silent for a moment. 'Watson, you idiot!" he says. "Someone has stolen our tent!"

Joe, I've read several different versions of this joke.
The last one I read (before this one) was about the
Lone Ranger and Tonto. They of course all end the
same. Thanks for sharing!!!

Hi Iris,

The Lone Ranger was one of my very favorite TV shows as a kid! You know this joke would have been even funnier if I had heard it featuring them, especially if Tonto was speaking Watson's part with an English accent!

That reminds me of a Sanford & Son (another old favorite) episode when Lamont joins a neighborhood acting troupe and brings Fred along to watch them rehearse. Fred gets the Director so upset with his constant suggestions and comments that he quits and tells Fred to go ahead and direct it himself, Fred does not miss a beat grabbing the guy's beret, megaphone and seating himself in the Director's chair barking orders.

To make a long story short Fred decides to give the play a bit more class by directing Lamont to speak with an English accent, it is a play about a contemporary love story set in the inner city and hearing the accent was so ridiculous that no one in the cast could keep a straight face!

I almost fell off my chair laughing, of course the only one not smiling was Lamont.

That was hilarious....and a real life lesson....seeing the big picture but missing the little (but important) things....

I have done exactly as Watson more than a few times!

Janice...

We have to loose our shirts first!...

[Sorin]

LOL!

[gmik]

Funny

Now, I don't get the lose/loose joke??

Which is it lose-something gets lost; or loose-something baggy or ill fitting.

I know, teacher should be on vacation!!

[Deborah-Leigh]

Sorry Gena

Perhaps you do not have an equivalent in the USA for the meaning of this saying to loose your shirt....It means to loose your physical possessions....your assets of material wealth...

What I was inferring is that we have to move out of our physical dependencies to our Spiritual Father who supplies all our needs.

Hope that clears this up. No offence meant! I see the tent to equate to our body that houses our soul and spirit...So the order of this would be to hope we loose our attatchments to carnality BEFORE we loose our Tents...bodies in the first death!! ie...Hoping for the first Resurrection to Life!...

Peace to you sister

Hi Arcturus,

We are very familiar with that expression here in the States, especially after visiting Las Vagas, Atlantic City, numerous Indian Reservations with Casinos, Horse Race Tracks, etc. As a matter of fact I can safely say this old saying gets repeated thousands of times a day over here!

Joe

[Deborah-Leigh]

WOW thanks Joe....I have never been to Las Vegas etc!!!!

I am a born loosing gambler!!!

Oops, I missed the Schoolmarm's correction too!

Arcturus, I see now that Gena was inquiring what word was intended, lose (as in misplacing) or loose (as in untying).

Peace,

Joe

P.S. Gena, Schoolmarm is an affectionate nickname I have for our daughter.

[jER]

Because there are at least three different definitions for the word "tent", let me say it like this:

"Free from the flesh and carnal mind."

Spiritually speaking - jER

[Deborah-Leigh]

My forte is NOT SPELLING ...I thought my spelling was wrong so I was glad Gena defined the word I used and meant and showed it was not misspelled!

Peace to you
