All in His Time and Season
YellowStone:
Hi Joe, I think this was the last straw for me as I discovered the words that I learned in grade school could mean anything but what they said when read in the Bible. This was when I walked away from all my many Bibles, books, ect for searching with my eyes and ears only led to greater confusion. A good friend and the local minister gave me a New King James Bible for my 21st birthday, with the following inscribed on the inside cover: "Pro 3:5 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding"
Those words never left me and I soon realized that my understanding could only come from God and not from myself, so I walked away and let go of everything so that God might teach me, and teach He did, for the truth became very easy to see and the lies impossible to miss.
One should never debate Scripture with Scripture, I will now only sow the seed of doubt and ask a simple question: "before you answer, how can you be so sure?" and leave it at that.
Thanks for a great thread Joe :)
Love in Christ,
Darren

Another thing I've run into when trying to simply talk with some Christians is one of their favorite responses is, "That's not what PASTOR SO AND SO says."
<sigh> I so wish people could open their minds a bit. All in due time I suppose.

Unless someone truly wants to know and is willing to at least consider.....I wouldn't even bother to tell anyone.
Last nite my 2 sons & I were debating the Iraq war. Duh, fugiddabotit! Debates just declare your beliefs w/ no intention of changing or even thinking about the other side.
Darren, I love Prov. 3:5. That is pretty much IT in a nutshell.

This has been a very timely post for me. Thank you Joe for the edification. That is what it is all about anyway isn't it. Instruction, clarification, consultation.
Gena, you are so right about debates; they really are just an out loud declaration of ideology. Has anyones mind ever been changed in the history of the world by a debate? I use to could get down and dirty expounding on an idea, then I realized...What really is the point? All I was really trying to do was prove that my idea could beat up your idea! What a colosal waist of time!
If it's not instructive it's hardly worth our breath.

You are welcome Darren and Jackson, thank you both for your insights as well, I very much agree Matt and Gena it is rather pointless, it is better to just live the Word and be ready to give an answer if and when you are asked.
Another point here is that we must remember that the entire Bible is primarily for the edification of His elect, it's message is mostly a big secret to everyone else. It is not just the parables Jesus spoke that was for His own to understand and not the multitudes but everyone not chosen by Him (at this time).
His Peace and Wisdom to you,
Joe
