YLT Job 8:11
« on: December 19, 2007, 09:09:26 PM »

Does anyone else have a copy of Young's Literal Translation where
Job 8:11 reads
Doth a rush wise without mire? A reed increase without water?

Should it read?
Doth a rush rise without mire? A reed increase without water?

check other translations

KVJ Can the rush grow up without mire? can the flag grow without water?

NKVJ Can the papyrus grow up without a marsh?
Can the reeds flourish without water?

Amplified Can the rush or papyrus grow up without marsh? Can the flag or reed grass grow without water?

Rotherham Can the paper-reed grow up, without a marsh? Or the rush grow up, without water?

At biblegateway.com and olivetree.com for YLT the verse comes up:
Doth a rush wise without mire? A reed increase without water?

Has this always been misspelled for YLT or just recently?

Main Entry: 1rush
Pronunciation: \ˈrəsh\
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English, from Old English rysc; akin to Middle High German rusch rush, Lithuanian regzti to knit
Date: before 12th century
: any of various monocotyledonous often tufted marsh plants (as of the genera Juncus and Luzula of the family Juncaceae, the rush family) with cylindrical often hollow stems which are used in bottoming chairs and plaiting mats

Main Entry: 1reed
Pronunciation: \ˈrēd\
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English rede, from Old English hrēod; akin to Old High German hriot reed
Date: before 12th century
1 a: any of various tall grasses with slender often prominently jointed stems that grow especially in wet areas b: a stem of a reed c: a person or thing too weak to rely on : one easily swayed or overcome
2: a growth or mass of reeds; specifically : reeds for thatching

Both are close together or in mass and of course both need water to grow.
I think it means we need jesus  to grow spiritually.

Hi mrl1970,

King James Version
Job 8:11  Can the rush1573 grow up1342 without3808 mire?1207

H1342
גּאה
gâ'âh
gaw-aw'
A primitive root; to mount up; hence in general to rise, (figuratively) be majestic: - gloriously, grow up, increase, be risen, triumph.

(ASV)  Can the rush grow up without mire?
(CLV) Can papyrus grow without a marsh?
(ESV)  "Can papyrus grow where there is no marsh?
(GNB)  "Reeds can't grow where there is no water;
(LITV)  Can the rush grow up without mire?
(NASB)  "Can the papyrus grow up without a marsh?
(NIV)  Can papyrus grow tall where there is no marsh?
(NKJV)  "Can the papyrus grow up without a marsh?
(Rotherham) Can the paper-reed grow up, without a marsh?
(rsv)  "Can papyrus grow where there is no marsh?
(YLT)  `Doth a rush wise without mire?

I think this is just a error and the 'w' in the word wise should have been an 'r,' as you suggested  :)

mercy, peace and love
