I find this an interesting subject.  I don't think it is genuine, but it is still has an interesting history shrouded in mystery.  According to what I've read, the most likely forger was Leonardo Da Vinci.  He was the only one who had the genius and technology to perpetrate such a convincing hoax. Also, he had a personal vendetta against the Catholic Church, so "pulling the wool over their eye" was certainly consistent with his attitude.
