A question about divorce.
« on: February 28, 2008, 08:26:15 PM »

There's probably a bunch of stuff on the site or the forums about this subject, but I was wondering if anyone could point me to where I might find anything on this subject here? What are peoples views on this matter?
Reason I ask is, 12 years ago I was divorced, and I have since remarried. Christ makes a pretty emphatic statement in Luke 16:18 18 “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery; and whoever marries her who is divorced from her husband commits adultery.
This scripture has bothered me for a long time now. My old Pastor told me it was a problem I had to deal with, but never suggested what I should do. It left me thinking that I basically had these choices........remain married and risk eternal torment (I was still in Babylon at the time), or totally ruin my life, my wifes, our relatives, make myself homeless, possibly jobless seeing as I need a home to work from, risk financial ruin, and go to Heaven.
Well I know now I won't be going to hell, but this issue still bothers me.
If there's any teaching here anyone can point me to, or any guidance anyone has to share I would be most greatful.

That is from a bad translation David. I believe the real scripture is about "putting away" one's wife without the paperwork. God certainly prefers for us to NOT divorce but the bad translation of that scripture makes it sound much worse than it is. Yes, I know of a pretty good study on it but I'll probably get in trouble putting the link on the forum so I'll message you privately.

Just remember that God has you where he wants you mistakes and all. You're worrying about it is a very good sign. I went through the same thing.

Sent ya an email and a message...

Hi David
I have been through exactly the same as you ,having also remarried 12 years ago . I went through all the same mental wranglings that you went through, will I end up in the LOF as an adulterer have I displeased God etc.It took me a long  while to settle it in my mind although the thoughts  occaisionally popped up now and then.
However, since I read Ray's paper on the sermon on the mount, where he touches on those verses in Matthew regarding divorce I haven't given it another thought and have been set free and I am at peace about the issue.

Hope that helps

Divorce:  The only way that Jesus said one can leave a marriage and/or marry another is if there is "pornia" present (called 'fornication') in the King James.  Pornia means "prostitution," but it can also mean a host of sexual immorality.  Also, Paul tells us that if a man will not provide for his own family, he is "WORSE than an infidel." The same is true of a man or deserts his family, or abuses his wife or children. In such cases of "immorality" a mate should not be considered bound.
