Earthquake in Indiana today.
« on: April 18, 2008, 08:31:44 PM »

Well good evening folks in Tennessee,

This morning we had a little surprise in the event of a 5.2 level earthquake
that was felt as far North as South Bend, IN.
The epicenter was near Southern Indiana/Illinois and in the same area as
the 1811 earthquake that moved the Mississippi River into a new channel.

The 1811 event was quite destructive and has been estimated at 8.0
on the Richter Scale, but there was not much loss of life, in that the area
had not yet been developed.  If such a quake would occur today we would
see thousands killed in collapsed building and so forth, because we don't build
our high rise buildings to withstand earthquake in this area of the U. S.

According to history 30 square mile Reelfoot Lake was formed or greatly enlarged
during the 1811 quake and by chance the U. S. Geological survey team had been
mapping the area only a few years prior to that event and had good measurements
recorded.

Maybe we are in for another sometime soon.

Interersting. We had a tornado in downtown Atlanta a few weeks ago. Luckily it did not cause too many problems.

I didn't feel the earthquake itself but I felt an after shock around 11, the house shook a little and the mini blinds were swinging. A couple of hours later I found out about the eartquake this morning. Pretty scary.
