Fire

(1/4) > >>

rocky:
I read this on Ray's site tonight, LOF series #3.

Is "fire" in the book of Revelation DIFFERENT from the fire that tries the works of believers in the book of I Corinthians? NO. The word "fire" used in the four examples above concerning believers, is the SAME word "fire" used in the book of Revelation concerning non-believers:

STRONG’s Greek Dictionary of the New Testament, page 219, #4442, pur; a primary word; "fire" (literally OR FIGURATIVELY. Pur is used (besides its ordinary natural significance):

(1) of the holiness of God, which consumes all that is inconsistent therewith, Heb. 10:27; 12:29; cf. Rev. 1:14; 2:18; 10:1; 15:2; 19:12;

(1a) similarly of the holy angels as His ministers, Heb. 1:7;

(1b) in Rev. 3:18 it is SYMBOLIC of that which tries the faith of saints, PRODUCING WHAT WILL GLORIFY THE LORD;

(2) of the divine judgment, testing the deeds of believers, at the judgment seat of Christ I Cor. 3:13 and 15;

(3) of the fire of DIVINE JUDGMENT upon the REJECTERS of Christ, Matt. 3:11 (where a distinction is to be made between the baptism of the holy Spirit at Pentecost and the "fire" of divine retribution; Acts 2:3 could not refer to baptism); Lk. 3:16."

End of quotation, (All CAPS emphasis are mine).

I then looked at this verse in James,

Jam 3:6  And the tongue is a fire (pur): the world of iniquity among our members is the tongue, which defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire (different strong's number, not pur)  the wheel of nature, and is set on fire (again not pur)  by hell.

Here it is with strongs numbers

Jam 3:6  And2532 the3588 tongue1100 is a fire,4442 a world2889 of iniquity;93 so3779 is2525 the3588 tongue1100 among1722 our2257 members,3196 that it defileth4695 the3588 whole3650 body,4983 and2532 setteth on fire5394 the3588 course5164 of nature;1078 and2532 it is set on fire5394 of5259 hell.1067

Our God is a consuming fire (pur)

Heb 12:29  For1063 (2532) our2257 God2316 is a consuming2654 fire.4442

I find it interesting, that pur can be both God, and the tongue (that defiles the whole body).

Seems like strong's left out the definition regarding the tongue.

Wondering if I am looking at this correctly, and what others thoughts are on this.

chrissiela:
Rocky,

We are judged 'out of our own mouth' and the TONGUE has the power OF LIFE AND DEATH. It is with the TONGUE that we must profess that Jesus Christ is Lord.

I see these things as all being connected.

Look at the parable of Lazarus and the rich man. His TONGUE was tormented in the fire.... he wanting 'a drop of water' to cool his TONGUE.

I will try to put something together better than 'this'  :lol:  :lol:  but just thought that might give you something to consider and look at.  :mrgreen:

Blessings,
Chrissie

eutychus:
good points Chrissie,

can we apply this:

Mar 7:20 And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man.

peace
chuck

Job 9:20 If I justify myself, mine own mouth shall condemn me: [if I say], I [am] perfect, it shall also prove me perverse.

rocky:
God is a consuming fire.   The tongue is a fire.  The tongue condemns, God's consuming fire condemns.  Destruction before Life????

Will look forward to more Chrissie.

Here is those same verses in Youngs

Jam 3:6  and the tongue is a fire, the world of the unrighteousness, so the tongue is set in our members, which is spotting our whole body, and is setting on fire the course of nature, and is set on fire by the gehenna.

Rom 7:23  and I behold another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of the sin that is in my members.

Jam 3:7  For every nature, both of beasts and of fowls, both of creeping things and things of the sea, is subdued, and hath been subdued, by the human nature,

Jam 3:8  and the tongue no one of men is able to subdue, it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison,

Jam 3:9  with it we do bless the God and Father, and with it we do curse the men made according to the similitude of God;

Jam 3:10  out of the same mouth doth come forth blessing and cursing; it doth not need, my brethren, these things so to happen;

Gal 2:19  for I through law, did die, that to God I may live;

Gal 5:15  and if one another ye do bite and devour, see--that ye may not by one another be consumed.

Gal 5:16  And I say: In the Spirit walk ye, and the desire of the flesh ye may not complete;

Gal 5:17  for the flesh doth desire contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit contrary to the flesh, and these are opposed one to another, that the things that ye may will--these ye may not do;

Some kind of connection here, tongue, destroys, no man can tame.  Brings forth death??

Through this death comes forth life???

Is the deadly poison of the tongue that no man can tame the same as the consuming fire of God, that administers destruction in order for Life, all a part of the function of the law????

rocky:
Just thought of one more thing, speaking in tongues, a new tongue, not from the old, fleshly nature, tongue;  but the tongue of the spirit, that blesses the father.

The old tongue condems, leads to death, a fire that destroys.

The new tongue, one that praises, blesses the father, through the spirit.

ONly seeing pieces here, please anyone fill in the gaps.  thanks.
