James 3
« on: November 26, 2008, 10:53:25 AM »

I was reading this again this morning and it certainly contains some very humbling wisdom;

 James 3

1My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation.

2For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body.

3Behold, we put bits in the horses' mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body.

4Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth.

5Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!

6And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.

7For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind:

8But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.

9Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God.

10Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.

11Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter?

12Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh.

13Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom.

14But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth.

15This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish.

16For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.

17But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.

18And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.

 Amen!

Thankyou Joe,

I will only add to your Scriptural presentation of James chapter 3 in consideration
of the Tongue and it's constitution of a World of unrighteousness among our body
members, set aflame by Gehenna Fire(Verse 6) the Scripture below.

James. 1:19,20 " Know this, beloved brothers. Every Man must be swift about hearing,
slow about speaking, slow about wrath; for man's wrath does not work out God's
                    righteousness. "

Also I especially appreciated these verses you presented from James chapter 3, copied
                    and pasted below.

9Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God.

10Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.

11Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter?

                                  Kind Regards, Samson.

Hi Brenda & Samson,

Samson, thanks for the additional scripture from James and I am there with you Brother in regard to the portion of James 3 that you noted, for I believe those are the key verses dealing with the essence of the message of that chapter.

Peace,

Joe

Meekness of wisdom, what a beautiful thing!  To obtain this is truly a gift from God.  Most people who think they are wise, are full of pride.:)

Thanks for sharing Joe,

Joe,

Thanks for the reminder and admonitions from The Apostle James, words to live by indeed. Along with that
please allow me to add This Scripture that matches i believe is:

Matthew 15: 10-11
10-And he called the multitude, and said to them, Hear, and understand:
11-Not that which goes into the mouth defiles a man; but that which comes out of the mouth, this defiles a man.

Hey Joe,
I love thoses verses in James 3 particularly these two:
5Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!

6And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.

These are such great verses Samson!
James. 1:19,20 " Know this, beloved brothers. Every Man must be swift about hearing,
slow about speaking, slow about wrath; for man's wrath does not work out God's
                    righteousness

Our tongues are small but they can put out a bigger hurt than a whip sometimes can't they? It is  a struggle I have each day.

Hey Brothers and Sisters,

Thank you for all the great responses and words to meditate on, actually it was the thread Marques started (All One) that prompted me to study further;

http://forums.bible-truths.com/index.php/topic,8782.0.html

I started thinking about being "idle" in a spiritual sense and it actually became a bit terrifying to consider that every word we utter is subject to judgment by our Lord and God.

Mat 12:36 But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.

Wow :o

Some severe ramifications to consider....

Peace,

Joe

Hi Joe,

It never ceases to amaze me that often times something happens in my life and then I come here and read pertinent scriptures.

For example, I was sitting here alone with my husband and he said something mean about someone and I admonished him and he said, "who does it hurt? You are the only one who heard me."  Oh Really????  ;)
I then read him your post.  Perfect.

Hi, That scripture really makes your eyes pop out.  We really need to bite our tongue before we speak.

Thank you Joe, that is so true, I especially love verse 17.

"But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy."

If we could just remind ourselves of this before we speak and act.  That is very thought-provoking for sure! I'm going to go to sleep tonight with those words in my heart.
Thank you again!

Forget about VISA, the Scriptures are indeed priceless.

2 Timothy 3
16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness,
17 that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly equipped for all good works.

Galatians 6
1 Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye who are spiritual restore such a one in the spirit of meekness, considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted.

Matthew 5
9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God.

Had Christ gone all Matthew 23 on his disciples, they would have probably been offended as well and possibly even kill Him themselves. But because He knew their hearts (as opposed to the Pharisees' hearts), he exemplified James 3 when among them.

Thanks be to GOD for this thread. I suppose it is true what Ray once said...iron sharpens iron.

All Glory to GOD

Mat 12:36 But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.

I remember kids would say sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me.
Words do hurt, not only that but we will be judged for our idle uncontrolable talk.

First off I want to thank all who responded, you really expanded this topic with many things to consider and meditate on. For me this is an incredibly difficult thing, actually an impossible thing without the grace of His Spirit working on me, to bring my thoughts and actions more in line with His will.

Sometimes I catch myself in mid sentence saying things I should not be speaking, it could be at work, among friends and even with my family. It is a great disappointment to stumble, even fall so easily. Thank God He is right there to take me by the hand and patiently bring me back on the path that leads to eventual full Sonship, He does not abandon us!

You know this also extends to our thoughts, even if we somehow are able to bridle our tongue if we are harboring ill will toward another for any reason we are subject to judgment even if these thoughts remain unspoken!

Peace,

Joe

I agree!!
Hebrews 4-12
12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
