Stopping the sun
« on: December 25, 2008, 09:28:30 PM »

hey I was talking with my grandpa about this.

if the suns were to stop, the planets would crash.

what does the hebrew really say?

I am trying to figure it out.

if somebody wants to check it out, its in joshua 10:11-14

well the first thing, its that its not a simple "sun stop", its more than that.

it was during day time. [yom]

Joshua told the sun to  "and he said in the sight of Israel, Sun, stand thou still upon Gibeon;"

he also told this other valley to stay at

" and thou, Moon, in the valley of Ajalon."

he told the sun to stay in one valley and the moon to stay at ajalon.

"So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day."

to go down, can also be translated BY DEFINITION, to come, to carry, to run, to set.

we also have to take into account, whats the point in the sun being at that place and the moon at that other place.

to make an eclipe, what could it be?

Hello Carlos,

Here is an excerpt of an email reply from Ray to a reader where he touched on these particular scriptures (http://forums.bible-truths.com/index.php/topic,2084.0.html):

There are dozens (perhaps hundreds) of apparent contradictions in the Scriptures. I cannot take the rest of my life to try and explain them all. Hope you understand. It just doesn't bother me. Why spend time on what appear to be slight variations in the Scriptures?  What is gained?  Does the fact that the Bible says "the sun stood still in the midst of heaven," when in reality, for the sun to not move across the sky, it is the EARTH that would have had to "stand still" prove that the Bible is false, unreliable, and not of God? From the perspective of the earth, the sun DID STAND STILL IN THE MIDST OF HEAVEN.  From the perspective of the earth, the sun DOES RISE and the sun DOES SET.  We do not speak of earthrise and earthset.

Basically, it is the earth and other planets that orbit around the sun not the sun 'moving' around the other planets.

Regarding the moon, if you do a search on Google about seeing the moon during the day, there are a number of astronomy websites to explain those details. I have seen the moon during the day once or twice. A little freaky but I got over it...  :D

I'm pretty sure another member can help you with the spiritual significance of this occurrence.

Hope this helps,

Marques

i'm not sure if you know, but everything in the universe moves, planets AND the sun.

so what would be the right translation?

If the Earth all of a sudden stopped spinning, wouldn't we go flying away towards outer space tangent to the velocity at which it was spinning? Unless it could have slowly decelerated but how long would that take? I'm a bit confused on this one. I suppose theres someway He could have done this. Maybe the sun moved in relation to the earth.

I was referring to planets orbiting or 'circling' the sun. The sun does not orbit around the planets.

that's true but the sun does move.

as we read, the sun was order to be put in a specific place, and so THE MOON.

there has to be a meaning to this.
