Title: Hatred/Loving our enemies
Post by: Rocket999 on December 15, 2008, 08:28:54 PM
Is it wrong to just ignore the people that my carnal mind wants to hate? I find myself I can love them (as we are commanded to love our enemies) as long as I don't have to be around them or deal with them. I feel terrible that some of my own family members annoy me this bad, but it's like every single time I'm ever around them as soon as they open their mouths I get extremely fired up and hostile towards them so I feel I'm best off just trying to avoid them...

thank you for any reply you can give me,
Ray

^I sent this email to Ray, but I understand how I might not get a reply (atleast for a while) because of his condition and busy schedule. Could I got some insight from anyone else?

I think Rays audio/transcript describing agapeo and phileo love may help you.

Yes, it's like Ray said in that particular topic, you can love someone, but that doesn't mean you hang out with them or socialize with them.

Sometimes you just have to ask God to shut your ears and eyes to them and block out their annoyances. It is amazing how much better you feel when you can just turn and walk away when they start whatever they do that annoys you. I always just pray that God will change my attitude. I've always loved that proverb "a soft answer turns away wrath"Proverbs15:1. A friend once asked me, "What if when you give a soft answer the wrath that's turned away isn't his, but yours?" ooh there is something to ponder, huh?

"But grevious words stir up anger." that is a mouthful of truth right there. :)

Did Jesus love the pharisees?

Yes.

Did he teach them?

Yes.

did they listen?

No, at least most of them no.

Did Jesus treat them nicely?

No.

I have a sister that is so annoying, Yet I love her and would do what I could to help her if she needed.
Fortunately the feeling is mutual but if I need her she would be there.
Since we both annoy each other we don't socialise much.
We love each other without being around each other.

Eileen's resource is the most valuable for helping us know how to deal with those pesky 'other people' that God has put in our lives.

It helps, I think, to keep in mind the ultimate goal of God in both their lives AND yours.  How else can we pray within the will of God for those that despitefully use us, for example?  We're going to be Sons and Daughters of God in the very image of Christ.

You ask 'Is it wrong...'.  No...it isn't wrong if that's the best you can do for the moment.  But I think just by asking the question you already know that this isn't the ultimate will of God for us.  We GROW in Grace, however, and these tribulations and annoyances are a part of what makes that happen, and serve as benchmarks/signposts to let us know whether we are beginning to measure up to the fullness of character which the Spirit of God is working in us to produce.  That takes time and pressure.

If avoiding these people helps you to 'not hate', then do that.  But pray for these your enemies, and be open to the probability that God has set them in your life for the very reason of teaching you a better way in His good time.  It may happen sooner than you think.

Welcome to the forum, by the way.

Rocket,

I can often relate to some extent about how you feel. I'm rarely hostile, if ever. But when internal frustrations generate through annyoing actions of others I usually resort to one of the most recognoized scriptures on the subject:

“Judge not, and you shall not be judged. Condemn not, and you shall not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven."

Luke 6:37

And as Dave said..welcome to the forum! nice to have you

God Bless!
