Title: Music that might make the Spirit smile
Post by: onelovedread on September 01, 2013, 04:33:20 PM
Alex posted a beautiful piece under "Music for the Soul." I praise God for His indiscriminate pouring out of gifts on his children. He has lavishly given music to us and even though we can't all play we can feel the power and enjoy it's beauty.

Here are a few pieces that never fail to touch me deep in my soul. I'd love to share.
Sorry for the commercials. :-[

Nice selections, JohnChris. :)

I now listen to the Classical Music station (WETA 90.9FM) on the radio when I'm driving to and from work.  It's very soothing to me while dealing with traffic in the DC area.

To each his/her own in music taste. I love music which is up lifting to my spirit.
I personally like light classical, just as many of us older folks tend to do.
And some country/western I can handle too.:)

Say, do we make an idol of the heart out of Christian Music, especially the so called annointed songs that make you sway rythmically and raise hands and do all sort of things that you normally wouldn't be seen doing in public.

http://bible-truths.com/lake14.html

IF YE BE CIRCUMCISED, CHRIST SHALL PROFIT YOU NOTHING

To me it is a thing of overwhelming amazement that what most Christians around the world aspire to BE and ACCOMPLISH in their spiritual walk with God, is the very thing that our Apostle Paul called: "DUNG"!

Christians claim that their bondage to physical commandments and traditions of men, are really spiritual.

Some make an idol of the heart out of keeping the Saturday Sabbath;

others make an idol of the heart out of claiming they are "tithing" when they give money to the church;

others make an idol of the heart out of physical circumcision;

others make an idol of the heart out of being baptized in the name of Jesus ONLY;

others make an idol of the heart out of believing in the unscriptural teaching of a trinity or rapture,

others make an idol of the heart out of demonic gibberish and tongues speaking;

others make an idol of the heart out of drinking poison and handling poisonous snakes;

others make an idol of the heart out of Christian Politics;

others make an idol of the heart out of their own church affiliation or pastor or choir or a plethora of church activities;

others (many) make an idol of the heart out of some pet, little-understood and little-believed Bible prophecy, which only they understand;

others make an idol of the heart out of much speaking using spiritually-sounding words and phrases (of which they understand little or nothing);

others make an idol of the heart out of joyfully condemning all those who do not subscribe to their brand of Christianity, to an eternal torture in hell fire (I am the brunt of a lot of these);

and others just flat out worship themselves.

Just wondering :)

Hey Loretta:
That's a thought provoking question. Many differentiate between Christian and secular music but it all comes from 'man' who is human. I don't do that anymore although I recognize the genres and sub-genres (Christian Rap, Christian Rock, Negro Spiritual, Traditional Gospel, Christian Pop, Soul Gospel, Hip Hop Gospel  - hahaha it could go on an on)

For myself, I apply this Scripture:

"For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure."
Could it be that God is the one Who provides that "good pleasure" in my inner being? I'd like to think that His Spirit guides my dislike for suggestive and profane music.

And I try to do this (often unsuccessfully):
"Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things."

Music is an undercurrent of my life but not I believe an idol of my heart. I believe it can be one of the most powerful and beautiful gifts of God to comfort us through the trials of life.

Beautiful! This music reminds me of the vastness and absolute sovereignty of God! And when Jon starts to sing, it's in icelandic so I can sing any verse to go along with it :)  I'm so thankful the Lord created these gentlemen to do what they do.

Such wisdom, John Chris! Truly.

Now I can REST and enjoy the music, God has allowed man to create for our, albeit, soulish pleasure.  After all He made us living souls not spirits!  :) :)

I remember, growing up, never listening to the lyrics of the song.  We'd just bee bop along to the catchy tune, however vulgar the words.  Now my teen daughter is more discerning, having been raised on the Word.  She doesn't listen to Christian music anymore, but good wholesome music. For this I am eternally (sic) grateful.

Talking about Christian music, I recall meeting a church worship leader who told me that in heaven there will be no more praying, works etc, just worship. So we must practice it here! I believed him at the time...

You mean where not going to be bouncing up and down and spinning around speaking in tongues while listening to Kenneth Copeland - I am disappointed.........what else is there to look forward to. Actually is that heaven or hell I get the two confused sometimes.

Ray once mentioned a verse about the Angels singing... and he asked; Who do you think taught these angels to sing? God.

Music is a beautiful thing and I am in agreement with the lot of us here that music can be very beneficial to our souls..

In fact... now I wonder... do these songs that reach to the depths of our souls resonate within us because they converge on that boundary between what we can and cannot know? Do these songs in some way, parallel the groaning of the spirit within us? That spirit yearning and reaching out to our Father.

Romans 8:22-23
For we know that the WHOLE CREATION GRONETH AND TRAVAILS IN PAIN together until now. And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves GROAN WITHIN OURSELVES, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body.

Romans 8:26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the SPIRIT itself maketh intercession for us WITH GROANINGS which cannot be uttered.

Sometimes when I hear these songs, I can feel a real pulling or tugging at my soul... as if something familiar, warm.. but I cannot put it into words. Maybe it is because it resembles in some way, maybe not even in a big way but in some way, the spirit within groaning out for the Father.

That's just my random thoughts and I have no scripture to back it up.. just thought it was interesting because often times the music does sound like some deep yearning or groan outwardly towards something, someone... something greater.

Claudia, I think you have a point there.  From the following passage it seems to me that God gave David the gift of playing on the harp so skillfully that it brought relief to Saul upon whom God Himself had caused a distressing spirit to come.

1 Samuel 16: 14 But the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and a distressing spirit from the Lord troubled him.  15 And Saul’s servants said to him, “Surely, a distressing spirit from God is troubling you.  16 Let our master now command your servants, who are before you, to seek out a man who is a skillful player on the harp. And it shall be that he will play it with his hand when the distressing spirit from God is upon you, and you shall be well.”
19 Therefore Saul sent messengers to Jesse, and said, “Send me your son David, who is with the sheep.”  20 And Jesse took a donkey loaded with bread, a skin of wine, and a young goat, and sent them by his son David to Saul.  21 So David came to Saul and stood before him. And he loved him greatly, and he became his armorbearer.  22 Then Saul sent to Jesse, saying, “Please let David stand before me, for he has found favor in my sight.”  23 And so it was, whenever the spirit from God was upon Saul, that David would take a harp and play it with his hand. Then Saul would become refreshed and well, and the distressing spirit would depart from him.
