Title: MCAT (May 8th) Please pray for me!
Post by: lilitalienboi16 on January 20, 2014, 12:57:07 AM
Hey everyone, forum family,

I am starting my journey down the MCAT exam again. After the application cycle, I recieved secondary apps but was unable to secure any interviews.

I've signed up for the exam May 10th. I'm getting my gears back into motion and starting to get back into the swing of things of studying for this exam. I would greatly appreciate any and all prayers from now until then if you could spare them.

The only reason I ever embarked on the journey last time and did as good (for a person like myself) as I did was because of the power of God and the support of the body of Christ.

I Just need the strength and the fortitude to endure the long hours required of me during the time of preperation and the ability to absorb and understand what It is I am studying and, very importantly, remembering it all for the exam.

They say that on average, it takes taking the exam at least twice before you get a score that is satisfactory enough for medical schools so I'm praying and working towards that. This will be my second time and by the Grace of God the last time to get me into medical school.

Anyway, I thought i'd just bring it up to everyone attention even though it is 4-months away. I spent three months straightly, literally, the last time doing this and I'm looking at giving it the same amount of preparation this time around.

Both eyes on Christ!

Anyway thank you everyone and God bless,
Alex

Wish you the best on your exam!

My best way to study is becoming a weird mix between hack-drill style and 'when I am feeling it' style...

Thanks Tim! Only by the grace of God. There is just simply too much on this exam. It's mind boggling O_O

Only a few weeks left till my exam everyone! I've made great strides by the grace of God in my test taking skills as far as this exam is concerned. I'm averaging right now on the practice tests between a 32-35. Lord willing, I can repeat these high notes on the day of the exam. I'm still trying to study as often as I can but i'm feeling warn out after three months of rigerous mental gymnastics. I could certainly use all your prayers, the ones that have seen me through some very hard days, in these days leading up to the exam and on exam day. I thank everyone again who has taken the time out of their busy, and perhaps sometimes difficult days, to uplift a brother whose problems are perhaps trivial in light of the things going on around the world and even in the lives of some of our brothers and sisters in Christ.

A deep love to all my family. Your support, your prayers and your love will never be forgotten.

God bless,
Alex

Thank you again everyone! I had to make a last minute change here, my exam is actually the 8th of may and NOT the 10th!! Apologies!! Today is my last practice test, tomorrow is a day of relation and some gym time followed by the exam on thursday!

I'm anxious, nervous, but excited also and ready to get this thing over with! Its been too long in the making.

Thank you Moises, you are absolutely right! I can't help but worry sometimes. I'm still human!

Whatever comes of this will be it, I've done my absolute best and I am confident of this. I've given it my all by the grace of God. No one can call me a quitter! I tried twice! :) Heck, i'd give it a third shot if I had to but unfortunately the exam is undergoing some drastic changes for the year of 2015, including the addition of sociology, psychology, humanities, anthropology etc..  I simply do not have the intellectual background (I have no studied these subjects during my time in school) and so would be vastly under prepared for the revamped edition of the exam. I think I would go crazy trying to fit all those extra subjects into my tiny brain... besides I can't spend my whole life studying for exams.. eventually I have to move on and get to working!

The nightmare is over everyone! Thank God! I will find out my exam score in roughly thirty days. Lord willing I get the score I need... I know I'll get the score the Lord has planned but I'm praying its the one I need to finally get me into medical school. No regrets. I'm happy its over.

I feel like I did really well on the biological sciences and strong on the verbal for what how I normally perform on it. The physical sciences was way out of left field, nothing like anything i"ve ever studied for or expected. From the consensus I got by speaking to other students who took the same exam I did, they were also of like mind on the physical sciences so I'm not too concerned as it will be curved and if everyone feels it was really hard then the curve will keep me in line with everyone else or above. God willing.

Anyhoo, I'm starting my applications all over again. Its a rather daunting task itself, letters of recommendation need to be sent, my transcripts from both colleges, my personal statement, my experiences, etc.. etc.. just lots of writing and driving around.

God bless everyone and thank you again for all your support. Much love!

Alex

Everyone, today is a day for joyous celebration. While this is only half the battle and I have not yet made it into medical school, I certainly have cause to be happy. God, our Lord Jesus Christ has shown me a great mercy and love along with the many other mercies I have been showered with though I've been least deserving of any.

Today, I got my MCAT score back. I scored a 33! That is equivalent to a 90%. Inotherwords I got an A on my medical admissions test!

There is a long road ahead,  mostly getting into medical schools by applying amd recieving interviews and not screwing the interviews up. Compition is fierce. Thabk you dear family for your unwavering love and support. I kindly request more of you all though. Contjnued suport and prayer that I find the medical school the Lord wants me to attend. I speaj boldly here as I know not His plans for my future but I take this good score as a sign to continue following my heart forward on this path to becoing a physician.

Love and blessings
Alex

Thank you soo much dean. This exam, while a huge deal and especially a huge deal for myself, is only the beginning. There is still getting into a school that lies ahead! God will provide, whatever His plan! Prayers from brothers and sisters mean everything though. Thank you Virginia. I went ahead and spent the past 8 hours sifting through medical school information etc.. trying to target the schools I have a good chance at getting into with a few dream schools on the list added just in case! Here is the list:

Albany Medical College

Baylor College of Medicine

Central Michigan University College of Medicine

Cooper Medical School of Rowan University

David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA

Drexel University College of Medicine

Keck Sch. of Med.University of Southern California

Loma Linda University School of Medicine

Medical College of Wisconsin

Michigan State University

Quinnipiac University SOM

Temple University School of Medicine

The Commonwealth Medical College

The University of Toledo College of Medicine

The University of Vermont College of Medicine

Tulane University School of Medicine

University of Arizona College of Medicine-Phoenix

University of Arizona College of Medicine-Tucson

University of Arkansas College of Medicine

University of California San Diego

University of California, Davis School of Medicine

University of California, Irvine- College/Medicine

University of California-Riverside School of Medicine

University of Illinois at Chicago-College of Medic

University of Louisville School of Medicine

Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine

This first application step was extremely expensive! 26 Schools so far that I sent out applications to. I may add a few more for the Allopathic Program (M.D.) if I come across a school that is too good to pass up as far as my competitivness is concerned.

Tomorrow I will be tacking the DO schools... a whole nother round of school sifting and application processing to get done with. I think I will rest for now.

God willing one or a few of these schools give me an interview and like what they see! I'm going to be doing some traveling across the country if I do get some interviews from any of these schools outside the california ones. I applied to almost all schools in my state... unfortunately my state is one of the most competitive which makes being a california resident, who is in the middle competitiveness wise, tough!

Please pray for me!!

God bless everyone!

Alex

Alex,

Looks like only one good medical school on your list.   8)

My advice, skip the D.O. schools.  Your grade on the MCAT is good for an M.D.  There is a shortage of good doctors.  Won't some states pay your way in school if you work in that state a certain number of years after graduation?

The Spirit will be with you and direct your path.

Sounds great Rene!

Jesse, I would love that! It would be so great to be near to one or more of my brothers and sisters! God's will be done.

John, I think I can guess what school that is, Mr. Kentucky! ;)

Unfortunately I don't know what God has planned as I cannot read His mind and He has not told me what school I will get into if any. Though as I said, with boldness I take this next step forward, taking my good score to be a sign to continue down this path towards becoming a physician. That includes DO medical school's as well as both MD and DO's perform the same duties with equal potential.

DO is a very good option for me as I am, usually, though not for all schools, very well qualified. With MD schools, I fall somewhere in the middle or bottom of the list.

I thank you for the vote of confidence though John :)

God bless,
Alex

Update:

I've started receiving secondary applications today. I've been working on one of them so far for the past few hours. The quinnipac university.

Please pray for me, that I am able to find the right words to get across who I am to the admissions committees of the schools. The secondary apps are very important in determining whether an individual gets a coveted interview spot.

I have so many things I want to say but so little space allotted to me by the secondary applications so I will certainly need God's help in this. My words must be chosen and none wasted.

Thank you everyone again for your continued support and prayers. You can expect that I will continue to get secondary applications throughout the coming days and weeks and even months. I applied to 38 schools so its possible that more than half of these find it acceptable to offer me a secondary application. Each secondary is a time consuming effort so I have my work cut out for me. They are also expensive, 100$ for some of them! That's twice the cost of the primaries... Ouch!

I will keep you all posted if any of these go on to further offer me an interview position.

God bless and much love,
Alex

Congratulations Alex, you made it thus far! :)

I can imagine the rigour you've gone through these past many months.  Here in India, students join med school at 17 and the competition is tough, given our numbers. So preparations start as early as 13 -14.  Poor kids don't have much of a life.  Thankfully my teen daughter isn't inclined towards the sciences, but she still has to have her nose in the books these days.

All the very best from here on.

Dear all,

Thank you for your continued prayer support and kind words to me. I am sorry I havnt given each of your the personalized responce your affection beckons.

I wanted to update you all on this endeavor of mine.

Over the past two months I recieved roughly 28 secondary appkications to the 38 schools I've applied to. Not a bad start. As things are now, I've not recieved any interviews. I've been put on hold at two schools, neither declined nor invited. I suppose its not bad news but its not good news either.

I've been tejected now from about 6 schools so that leaves rough 20 schools that are currently unaccounted for.

Now, today arrived,, the hold of the second school. These two schools are important though as todays' s was my top choice and very likely option given my competitiveness so I was disappointed to recieve this email of rejected for now, on hold possibly for later. Now for the first school, I was extremely qualified for academically considering my MCAT score and their requirement of a 22 to qualify. So, to be put on hold at two schools I felt I was fairly qualified seems like a sad affair as the rest of the schools I have not heard back from yet were tougher on their requirements and therefor less lilely to accept me.

While things are by no means over and God has the first, middle, and final say, I've begun contemplating where to go from here. Masters degree? Masterd , MCAT and try a third time for physician? Nursing program? Computer science (completely different field)? Since I do consider myself a father and a family man, I can't remain a student forever so I'm Praying if the Lord closes this door he direct me to the next available open one as I'd like to be able to provide for my family. I don't want to live with my parents forever, after all. This growing up business isn't an easy thing and I'm so greatful to have you all here to share my journey eith.

Thank you and God bless.
Alex

P.S. I typed this up on my phone so disregard the spelling and formating issues ;)

Dear All,

It appears I inserted foot into mouth. By some strange turn of event and more likely, God having his good laughs at my expense, though I don't mind since we are that close ;), it appears Liberty University did send me an interview and I fly to Virginia for the scheduled interview of October 13th. If anyone is in virginia and could pick me up from an airport, that be pretty cool. Otherwise, I can arrange, a taxi, i'm sure.

God bless,
Alex

P.S. Please keep me in your prayers for this interview, its the only one thus far and maybe the only one i get, period, but it only takes one! God willing, lots of mercy so its a good interview that gets me in!

Hi Alex,

I live in Virginia but Liberty University is over 3 hours from where I reside, so I will not be able to pick you up from the airport.  Sorry.  :(

Irony of Ironies, Liberty University was founded by Jerry Falwell who was a "big time" televangelist over the last 30 years and a contemporary of John Hagee and Dr. James Kennedy.  It is a University that proudly promotes it's "Christian" college education.  Not that this should have anything to do with your decision to go there.

Hey Alex,

Liberty University?  Have you checked out their beliefs?

In your interview, be sure to have a clean cut, idiot Christian smile on your face (act like you've just had a lobotomy) and you should do well.

Tell them you would love to be an intern in an Ebola clinic in West Africa and bring Christianity to the heathens.

Do Not tell them that you do not believe in eternal hell fire.  After all, this is a Christian university.  Behave yourself.

John

Right, You all know I'm going to school to become a physician and learn the skills necessary to practice medicine and bring care to those less fortunate if God so wills.

Both of you, John and Rene, know, that I am grounded in the faith that God has given to me as a gift and I will not relent on my understanding nor turn my back on that gift. Christ first and foremost before all.

God knows full well what He is doing and if I must, as a lamb, enter the den of wolves, then I know the Lord will keep me safe and guard my heart through my education if it is His will that I attend there. Did not Jospeh's brothers sell him into slavery yet God meant it unto good to save many? I'm not claiming to be joseph or anyone at all important but I have no power over where God sends me or what schools give me an interview. I wish I did, believe me!

I am still waiting on roughly 20 other schools but they are, as I said, for the most part, some of the more difficult schools to enter. If it were God's will that I could pick a school to attend and it would be so, then I would have done that but unfortunately I do not control these things and it is God who decides where I get interviewed at. I can only pray His will be done and that He draw me closer to Him in my life as I pursue what it is he has placed on my heart.

My first and foremost desire would be to stay in california where my family is, my daughter, and relatives are, but if this is not possible then I can't simply abandon my pursuit of medicine simply because I must attend out of state, or even attend a school whose beliefs may very greatly from mine own.

Please keep me in your prayers.

John, I don't know what to make of your post in its entirety. Are you dissuading me from attending? Looking down upon me for having applied here? What is the meaning of your post? I did detect some of your tongue in cheek humor however ;)

I do appreciate the information you both provided though on the school. I knew it was a christian school, just not all the nitty gritty details and I honestly don't really know who Jerry Farwell is, other than what you said of him Rene.

God bless,

Alex

P.S. John, when looking at the school itself, I consulted with http://www.liberty.edu/lucom/index.cfm?PID=27153, which is the directory for their medical school.

Rene, I would actually fly there October 11th, a Saturday, because I have to have a hotel and I'd like time to visit the campus which I could do the day prior--Sunday. This is the plan at least. They haven't sent me my itinerary yet but i'll keep you posted if for whatever reason you are available even just to meet up and chat for a little.

Sorry Alex,

I have a black belt with oak leaf clusters in humor, but most people cannot understand or appreciate my level of humor, although I make myself laugh all the time.

Please ignore my comments.  Most of my family are Christians so I just love them to death.  I am happy that I have influenced my two sons not to attend any church.

You do not know who Jerry Falwell was.  That makes me feel very, very old.  Thanks for the humor.

Go and do where you are led.  You have only one path that has already been set for you.  Take care,

John

Hey Alex, check it out:
http://www.liberty.edu/financeadmin/auxiliaryservices/transitservices/index.cfm?PID=21011
see if you can use their shuttle service, it's only $10 from/to Lynchburg Airport round trip.
Good luck, not that you need it if God does plan to send you there  ;)

No need to apologize dear brother. Your humor is something I usually comprehend but sometimes it is over my head. I'm not THAT smart ;)

Either way, thank you for showing your care for me. I know it was the heart of the matter in your expressing. You care enough at least to tell me what is on your mind! Of that I am extremely appreciative for.

Anyway, if you pray for me, keep it real! Pray for me like you would yourself John. With those open rebukes, no nonsense, sometimes hard to follow kind of humor. I mean it, sincerely!

Love to you,
Alex

Well Alex, you're kind of out of luck since I almost never, ever pray for myself.  Remember, there is only one prayer that God ever answers-----"Your (God's) will be done."

Dear all,

I have some exciting news for you! Jesse and I will get the opportunity to spend some time together this weekend when I fly out for my interview on the 13th.

He is picking me up from the airport which is extremely kind of him considering it will be a three hour drive!!

Well I just thought i'd let you all know. I'll see if I can get a few pictures of us on my camera phone to share with you all here if anyone is interested. For those of you that are in the area, don't be shy if you feel like you want to join us!

Please keep me in your prayers. I know its always "thy will be done" but even if its only that, I am tremendously grateful.

God bless,
Alex

Dear all,

Jesse and I just parted our separate ways for now as he returns to his duties at the fair and I spend the rest of my day making preparations for tomorrows interview.

Meeting Jesse was like meeting a long lost brother I've known my whole life. I have no doubt that we are bonded by that same spirit which binds me to the body of Christ and all my brothers and sisters. Words cannot express my gratitude nor the joy I had spending the day with Jesse. It is so refreshing to have a brother to discuss openly everything of God. Where I live, this does not exist, there is no fellowship such as this. We were both beyond bless to be able to fellowship together and to speak openly the thoughts on our minds and discuss our wondrous and mighty Father who has been so merciful. What love the Father has for us all!

I would cut off a bit of my right second toe to have been there.  Plus...it's been bothering me a bit lately anyway.   ;D

Go for it, Alex.

Where in TN are you? The festival goes on for another six weekends, so maybe we can arrange a visit. This is a few miles north of Charlotte, NC.  8)

Sadly, I am on the wrong end of this longest of all states.  Last time I took my car out on such a long road-trip I lost my transmission.  I'm not so young and carefree any more, though I used to be.  I'll just sit here and really love that picture.   ;D

My interview is over and I'm at the charlotte airport now waiting for my flight to LA.

God bless,
Alex

Dear Family,

Today I was accepted into Liberty University College of Osteopathic Medicine for the fall of 2015. It appears that there is a future in medicine for me after all. It is as the Lord has planned it.

I am still awaiting back from around fifteen schools to determine whether or not Virginia will be my final destination for studying and it would be nice to remain in california (three schools here still havn't accepted/rejected me yet) but I Know its all in accordance with God's plan and will.

My biggest fear during these next years will be that my studies will draw me away too much from my time with God. My ability to study and pursue Him. I pray that He will always give me time to meditate and dwell upon His Word, even in medical school.

I feel that if I do end up somewhere in Virginia, I will be much nearer to you all and that alone will give me the ability to pursue Him as I could spend some time with brothers and sisters in Christ growing and learning.

I'll keep you all posted if any other school's get back to me with interview offers or decisions.

God bless and thank you for the continued prayer and support. Please pray the Lord don't let go of me, even in medschool. It would be a most tragic thing. These things are all dung compared to Christ. It is exactly as Paul spoke it. I know.. its ironic I realize this all now after getting what I wanted. I told Jesse that if I get through all this, I will open a small practice, or, treat the brethren, brothers and sisters in Christ--Something small where I could still have plenty of time to continue to grow and study in Christ and not be consumed by the world.

Love in Christ,
Alex

Good to hear Alex

Sometimes it can be hard with other things but God is in it all. I face challenges with my work too with little time but just keep seeking God and He will show you.

Just saw your picture of you and Jesse........would not like to meet those 2 down a dark alley is what I thought  ;D ;D ;D :P :P :P
