Title: More ways to skin a cat
Post by: Joel on February 26, 2010, 11:54:19 PM
I was reading one of Ray's email replies the other day, and he used the skin a cat phrase. I'm from the south and we use to skin the cat on a tree limb or any type of bars. Any one have any like experiences? I got what Ray meant in his writing, approaching things from different view points. Just reminded me of the old days that's all.

I'm a military brat from a southern family.  That's the only way I've heard it used, I think...as an expression of doing the same thing in various ways.  But I don't have a clue where it came from.

Hi Dave,
In my young days, as a kid climbing trees, we had more than one way to fall out of one also ;D, and some where are another my first time introduction to the term was in the gangs jargon. Didn't know it had a broader meaning until later in life. 8) I thought up until then, it was our fancy dismount. :D

Why would they skin cats?

I'm a crazy cat lady. No skinning the cats!  :)

That sounds as if you are speaking literally! :o :D...skinning a cat on a tree limb...WOW  :D...or any type of bars! :D takes metaphoric interpretation to a whole new level!

This phrase dates way back to about 1648...meaning that there are many other ways to do something.he origin appears to be obscure.Someone else may have the gen on that....
But..I'm with you Cypress...No one is getting anything sharp near my Indi cat........ :) :)

I'd always heard the original meaning was different ways to skin a catfish before eating it.

I believe What Joel was referring to was a gymnastic exercise.
The person, suspended from a horizontal pole or tree limb,
swings his/her legs and feet between his/her arms and lowers himself/herself all the way down,
then pulls back up and through the arms.
The real trick is to not touch the ground to push yourself back up and through your arms.

Here is a You tube video of a little girl doing just this.

My husband HATES cats.... I have one who lives inside and he's so bad!! In our cat conversations we've had before I have said that my cat's name is Omega..but his nickname is El Diablo Gato! The sweetest cats I have are outside kitties...my mean ole husband would throw Omega outside, but I won't let him! Besides...my outside cats would not be safe with the Devil Cat roaming around outside!!! :o

I have one cat myself, "SAMBO", I've been fattening her up for about 8 years now ;D
When its raining cats and dogs here, I like to get the ones that hit the pavement, they don't require as much tenderising, and are easier to skin :D :D :D.
Seriously that video was exactly what came to mind, when reading Ray's writing.
Come to think of it I never saw Tarzan skin any cats, he probally couldn't take the harassment from the hyena crowd. Running around with that loincloth would present more than a few sideward glances. :o :D ;) ;)
I forgot what I was going to say now :D maybe later  ::)

We have a few animals one of which is Lupo. Lupo is Italian for Wolf.

That El Diablo Gato.... is Italian too!

George..   I could never have such a conversation with Indi cat........scratch..hisss....bite.... Are you sure you don't need to treat your cat for shock.... :)

Longhorn....You sure have one clever little cat.....but I need to tell you that it's all about servitude.....namely yours........I think you may have to do the royal flush yourself.......for a very long time....... ;D

Hey Longhorn,
My brother had a Siamese cat that did the same thing, it blew me away the first time I saw it do that. :o ;D
