Title: AMAZING GRACE - JUST THE BLACK NOTES
Post by: geokuhns on November 17, 2008, 02:11:32 PM
A friend sent me this link and I hope its approved for the Forum. Its a video on a "Christian" web site. The video is "amazing" and inspiring to watch. Just don't pay any attention to the articles on the site.  :)

Hi, George.

I would like to say welcome, just wanted to say brother that it does not work like that. No links allowed to any other Christian teaching. I made a few blunders myself believe me when I say you’re not alone here.

Welcome to the forum once again my friend and look forward to your threads.

                                               In God’s Love. Richard.

Sorry, but I have dial up so I can't watch it.  Anyway,

My take on the song "Amazing Grace"

Sing it churchy:

Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,

It aint always so sweet.  There's alot of chastening with grace.

That saved I wretch, like meeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!

Hold it, you aint been saved yet.  I don't think there's been a ressurection yet, has there, screechy?

I once was lost, but now I am found,

Ha, you singing in Babylon's cathedral aint ya?  You still lost!!

Was lost, but now I seeeeeeeeeeeee.

Ha ha ha.  What do you see?  The tithe bucket?  The jesus statue?  The self righteous suits in the congregation?  Boy, you don't see nothin!!

Needless to say, I got thrown out of the church by some angry cross wearing goons that day.

As per the title "Amazing Grace-Just The Black Notes"

Who can tell me what key that this song could be played on the piano where only black notes are used?

Would that be C#  (or is it Db) ?

I think I know it's a pentatonic melody.

Actually, the melody does use pentatonic scale notes.  But it would have to be based on a major key to employ the harmonies.  Regardless, it would be the same key name.  And yes, the first note of the song would be C#(Db).  But the key would be. . . . .?

For more than one flat, the (major) key is the next-to-last (second from right) flat.

5 flats - D,E,G,A,B , but on the staff, the d is next to last.  Db should be the answer I think -- Dflat.

The flat key would have 6 flats.  The enharmonic equivalent would have six sharps.

I believe Legoman has it.

I've got an internet friend in Rochester New York that eats and breathes theory.  We've done a fair bit of music together online.  I'd love to know half of what he knows.  It hasn't really helped me that my main thing is guitar strumming...chords are patterns rather than thoughtful note selection.  There's a spiritual application in there somewhere if I can quit playing the Casio long enough to get it.   :D

Yooooouuu,

are correct sir!!

OK music theory geniuses,  which "major keys" would use no black piano keys for Amazing Grace's melody?

Amazing Grace melody in just the white notes, use any of these keys: C Major, F Major, G Major.

I too am a musicman, as well as a legoman :)

Cheers,

Cheaters!!!

Oh, that's right, I did say music theory geniuses.  I meant to say music hobiests who used to take lessons in middle school but gave up b cuz it required too much dedication.  No real musicians allowed on any more music questions.

By the way, if this song is supposed to be sung at funerals then why is it even in the major?  These are not happy events, are they?  How bout we all sing it in the minor just to be different and see what happens?

Just because you can sing it to bagpipes doesn't make it sad.   :D

LOL musicman.  Fortunately its that same dedication that let me read and study Ray's papers! ;)  I honestly think many people don't read Ray's stuff cause they give up after the first paragraph and they'd rather just be told what to believe.

Anyway fun topic...

Cheers,
Kevin

Gee, you guys er so smart! Hoo!  :D I love music, I wish my parents could have pushed me to learn more about music when I was a kid. My parents always sang and that's what I learned to do. It took me a long time to learn not to sing louder than everyone else! ;D In defense of the guy singing that song he has a really beautiful voice! I was in Chorus in middle school! Ha! Ok I know I am not qualified to be in on this conversation! :'( :'(
Bummer.... ;)

All you great musicians. ;D

Hey, 8) my dad was a saxophonist before he died. I used to get stories from all his peers about how good he
was. Now me, i used my music lesson money to buy comic books and make stuff that blew up. Goes to show
i could have been a great musician but i bombed. Anyway what i did learn from hanging out with the band
was how to drink beer and rum.

That's my black humor notes. :o

george. :P

Ha! George, that's funny!  :D drinking beer and rum? not so funny! :P Well, life is a big boomer, huh? I mean when you blow stuff up! :o Oh, yeah I forgot, all you smarty pants musicians I play the ukulele  :P :P
( I DON'T hula!) well, I can a little, but never, EVER in public! Aha, ha, ha! :D :D :D

Have you ever heard of a song called "The Great Speckled Bird"? It's an old song, but anyway- my dad milked cows for years you could hear him out in the dairy barn,he was milking those cows and singing that song! He sang it loud and long! He had a real good voice, but he mostly only sang to his cows it would help him stay awake in the wee hours of the morning! :D He usually made up his own words, at 3am who can remember words to a song! And this is true, I'm not lying-his cows gave more milk than anyone's  cows for miles around! :D :D

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sDISGmxcd9Q

You might get a kick out of this I have no idea who this person is, but my dad sang it a lot better! ha!
this might make you laugh. I never did quite understand this song! ??? ;D ;D
Sorry musicman that you won't be able to hear this! :'(  ;) :D
For laughs!
Kathy :D

It's too early for stupidity! ;D

Hey you are absolutely correct.  For me, the existence of music is a major proof that there is a God.

Why does a simple C major chord sound beautiful to me?  I don't know, but it does.  Each note is interrelated in a perfect mathematical relationship.  It's all just math, but when you put it together it sounds amazing!

When my eyes were still closed to the truth, the beast was strong and in control.  I used to think I was so good at playing the piano and God would be proud of what I had accomplished with my piano playing.  Now I know better and know that it is all of God, and I thank him for giving me a gift.  Now I know that its silly I could play something that God didn't already know and in fact plan for me to play.

Thank God for the gifts he gives us!  The beast is still in control of me sometimes, but God willing it is getting better.

Kevin
