Title: Meditation??
Post by: Devolutionevolvd on March 21, 2006, 01:59:36 AM
I was reading through Ray's Lake of Fire series, and saw that he mentioned meditation.  I was just wondering exactly what he means by meditate on something.  Does he mean to actually meditate.....or Pray.  I always thought that Meditating was just a new age movement thing.

Prayer is of itself a form of meditation.

though Ray and Mike have touched on meditation in hearing the voice within us all.

Meditation has been around for centuries, although use in different forms.

Ahhhh.......grasshopper.....asking such a good question deserves a good answer.

confucius says: find a room alone and sit,
within you'll hear a voice of great wit.

i'm pretty sure meditating on a verse here means to think on it a lot.

from all different angles

looking at all related scriptures

thinking again

spending time in an attitude of hunger and thirst for the hidden things of God

not assuming that you already understand a verse or series of verses but thinking in the presence of God and praying as you do that God will speak the fullness

often as you meditate deeply and often on a verse(s) God will have mercy and open a really deep spiritual meaning or revelation that may have been hidden to the one doing the "meditating"

this is really the opposite of eastern meditation

eastern meditation is like emptying the mind whereas meditating on a verse is like filling your mind and really devoting everything you have to hear what God might have to say.

that sort of thing

Meditation is an important aspect of the Christian life; it is a necessary and valuable tool.  It was said by Falconn003, meditation is a great time to listen and receive from God.  Also Meditation is a time to gain understanding and insight into God’s Word.  Here are some scriptures I pulled off of E-Sword, I used KJV because a lot of people have one.  It is not the only version that uses the word meditate either.
Jos 1:8 KJV
Psa 1:2 KJV
Psa 63:6 KJV
1Ti 4:15 KJV

I dont' know if this is meditation or not, but do you guys find yourself, everywhere you go thinking about all the exciting good news we've learned.  God has implanted such a strong desire for more of his word, I find myself constantly thinking of these things, not even having to purposely meditate.

But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly *.

Yes I do, the great mysteries and grace and love our Lord represents are never far from my mind, whether at work or with the family and friends I find myself contemplating His wonderful plan. There are times (often) when I wish I could spend all of my waking hours studying and meditating and serving. I used the word meditating not because I am sitting cross legged on the floor, forefinger to thumb humming a mantra but because I clear my mind of my worldly obligations and contemplate the spiritual. Sometimes it becomes so overwhelming I must shut it down, my own unworthiness of this great gift and my insignificant self being important to the Creator of the universe is too much for my puny mind to contain.

Great thread!

I also try to find the time to meditate on many things. What it means to me is a quiet place, away from phones and interruptions that allows me to clear my mind and think on various things. At the present, I am still trying to "rebound" from losses of family members, the news of my child's cancer and other situations. That quiet time is a comfort to me as it allows me to open my mind to what God is doing in these situations and the peson He is molding me into.

Psa 46:10  Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.

It's not all that easy to do is slow down your thinking process and be still.

According to the dictionary, meditate means to ponder, to think about, to look into a subject or study it.
We are told in scripture to study, to compare scripture with scripture, to have the mind of Christ, to leave behind the elementary doctrines of milk and move onto meat.{I had to eat veggies, before I got into meat. I'm still eating veggies.} We are also told the holy spirit will lead us into all truth. So we will learn truth if we study and ponder the Word that God has given us to study. I think The Lord also will show us how two seeminly contradictory passages of scripture are really not, if we ask Him and think on the verses.
Devolutionevolvd- I like the Ayn Rand quote. I have read her books and find her mind as sharp as a tack. She made a statement in Atlas Shrugged about the absurdity of original sin. She was an athiest, but we will see her one day, a changed woman who worships God!
