Title: Suicide
Post by: Craig on October 17, 2006, 11:23:26 AM
Hello Ray-

What does the Bible say about suicides, and where?

Thank you so much, and God bless you and your work.
Sincerely-
Andy

Dear Andy:
There are only examples of suicide in the Bible:  Saul (I Sam. 31:4) and Judas (Matt. 27:6; Acts 1:16-20).  Suicide could be thought of as an extension of the commandment: "You shall not kill [Heb: 'murder'].  One has no legal right or justification for taking his own life just because he doesn't desire to live any longer.

However, I would be the last person to suggest that in bizarre casses of extreme pain and suffering, for example, that taking one's life would be thought of as evil.

On the other hand, it is both justifiable and a work of love to "sacrifice" oneself in the defense and/or salvation of another:  "Greater love has no man than this, that a man LAY DOWN HIS LIFE for his friends"  (John 15:13).  God will be the final Judge in all such matters that are not specifically covered by a specific law.
God be with you,
Ray
