Hello Everyone,

On the way home from work, this thought popped into my head, we already had favorite shows and movies, so I thought we could try favorite songs and recording artists. Before I make my list of 20 favorite songs and 10 favorite music groups, I WOULD LIKE TO EMPHASIZE, IT'S JUST FOR FUN, SOME PREFER JOKES, I LIKE SURVEYS, DIFFERENT STROKES FOR DIFFERENT FOLKS.

Well, here it goes.

Favorite Songs: 1) Still Loving You(The Scorpians); 2) Sweet Caroline(Neil Diamond); 3) Love is all around(The Troggs); 4) Love Bites(Def Leppard); 5) I will follow him(Little Peggy March); 6) You Don't have to say you love me(Dusty Springfield); 7) Magic Man(Heart); 8) Our House(Crosby,Stills,Nash & Young); 9) Love Hurts(Nazareth); 10) Those were the Days(forgot the artists name); 11) Doo Wah Diddy(Manfred Mann); 12) How can you mend a broken Heart(Bee Gees); 13) Born to be wild(Steppenwolf); 14) Another Brick in the wall(Pink Floyd); 15) Hey Jude(The Beatles); 16) Ball of Confusion(Temptations); 17) Lonely Days, Lonely nights(The Bee Gees); 18) Bohemian Rhapsody(Queen); 19) Run to the Hills(Iron Maiden); 20) Sometimes when we touch(Dan Hill). So their they are, theirs probably more.

I am impressed you have an absolute favorite #1.  I have so many :D  I have to put mine into categories: decade, country, rock, oldies, christian, etc...and even then I would have to have sub categories!!  My problem is I forget them and when I hear it I say "Oh, thats my favorite" until I hear another.

I will try to sit down and write them down and THEN come back and let you know.

(I just deleted most of this cuz I couldn't remember names!!!!aaacccchhhhh)

Actually Gmik, I misled you, those twenty songs are definitely favorites, but not necessarily in that order, because like you, I forgot some songs and had to test my memory banks, looking forward to your list.

Early Ozzy Osbourne, with Randy Rhoads on guitar (RIP). I've worn out several casettes of the live Tribute album, and lost a few CDs. That would be my favorite album. What a talent Randy was, and no one spoke bad about him. It breaks my heart when I think about it.

All my favorites are live albums. I like the energy over studio perfection.

Skynyrds' Freebird, live is a favorite.

Motley Crues' SOS is a good song, live.

led Zep, In The Evening, live

Nugents'  Great White Buffalo, live

Crues' Kickstart My Heart, live

I like Neil Diamond too. Not enough to buy anything, but if it's on the radio...

Pink Floyds' Comfortably Numb, live

Poisons' Nothin' but a good time.

Hey Brother Matt,

Yes, that is a coincidence, perhaps its a generational thing. I guess we both like a mixture of the softer music with some of the rougher stuff occasionally.

Have a good one, I'm on my way to the tennis courts

I love topics like these.....songs are pretty difficult....artists, easy.  No particular order.
1.  Styx
2.  Def Lep
3.  Foreigner
4.  Journey
5.  Boston
6.  The Eagles
7.  Doobie Brothers
8.  Petra (Christian reference)

I have seen 1-4 and 8 in concert multiple times.  My wife and I will be going to a Doobie Bros/Chicago concert this summer.  Would have loved to see Boston but the unfortunate death of their lead singer last year ended that hope.  The Eagles would be GREAT to see if they come to the St. Louis area!!!

I guess, based on my list, I am still living in the 70s and 80s.   8)

Chuck - my list would look very similar to yours, except I'm not crazy about Def Lep or the Doobies. Others I like:

1. Little River Band
2. Bee Gees
3. Air Supply
4. Abba (people laugh at that, but their harmony is SUPERB)
5. Steve Miller Band
6. Beach Boys
7. Chicago
8. Elton John
9. James Taylor
10. REO Speedwagon
11. Toto
12. Smashmouth (yes, I've come into the 21st century with at least one, LOL)

1. Beatles (no one even close to the impact and effect they had on me, the rest of the list is more categorical than anything else)

2. Steely Dan (and all the solo jazz/rock/pop artists they introduced, Tom Scott, Steve Gadd, Michael McDonald, David Sanborn, etc.)

3. Supremes, Temptations, Booker T. and the MG's, Four Tops, Stevie Wonder, The Rascals, Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding, (all the great artists from the Motown and Atlantic labels during the golden age of "soul."

4. Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Yes, Pink Floyd, Moody Blues (the "heady" rock)

5. Frank Zappa (bizarre but a true avant-garde composer)

6. Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, Cream/Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck Group; especially the album "Truth" featuring a young Rod Stewart on vocals who was actually the prototype that Jimmy Page found in Robert Plant when he formed Led Zeppelin a year later, of course Rod Stewart became a bigger (not better) artist (than Jeff Beck) in his own right.

7. Albert King, Allman Brothers, Marshall Tucker, Delbert McClinton, Howling Wolf, B.B. King, Doobie Brothers, Bonnie Rait, Little Milton, Bo Diddley, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Taj Mahal, Lyle Lovett, Susan Tedeschi (American music specialists who combined blues, country, gospel into their own unique styles and sounds)

8. James Taylor, Harry Nilsson, Elton John, Jimmy Buffett, (accoustical extraordinaires)

9. Dave Brubeck, Joe Sample, Peter White, Spiro Gyro, The Rippingtons, Stanley Clarke, Larry Carlton, Chick Corea (innovative Jazz greats IMHO of course)

10. Schubert (my favorite classical composer) all the other greats as well; Verde, Beethovan, Mozart, Chopin, Bach, Handel, etc. (These guys were a lot more interesting and unconventional than most people are aware of especially (again IMHO) Schubert who only lived to 31, existed mainly from handouts and by playing piano for tips in his local tavern, wrote his most uplifting pieces when depressed and his melancholy music when happy.

I'd probably get bashed if I listed my current "taste" in "music"; I enjoy the HEAVY METAL.
Country & Western was what I had to listen to growing up, music was a big part of our family. Some of the "old timers" may remember W. Lee "Pappy" O'Daniel (cousin) and the Light Crust Doughboys/Hillbilly Boys (Bob Wills played for Pappy).
So, I rebelled and went rock & roll crazy; Sugarloaf/Steppenwolf/Three Dog Night/Guess Who/Zeppelin/BTO/Z Z Top/Rush/etc..
Then I heard Iron Maiden, have not looked back since.

LOVE the heavy metal tooo...BUT the old version, better known as heavy rock, from the 70's 80's and a few from the 90's after that most heavy metal bands couldn't play or sing and today most are like that.

No.1 never to be dethroned Led Zeppelin......These guys could play absolutely anything and it was great!!
Followed by in no certain order:

Deep Purple
AC/DC
Thin Lizzy
Guns 'N Roses
The Cult
The Black Crowes
Foreigner
Van Halen
Pink Floyd
Velvet Revolver
Evanescence...hard to spell BUT what a VOICE.............GOTTA LOVE HER VOICE !!
.....and many others
It's amazing how I can enjoy all this music at the age of 46 without being stoned and drunk  ;D
ps...I will probably need a hearing aid soon though  :D

Love you guys...........John ;)

  Hey John,

We are glad to hear that your not drunk and stoned anymore(  ;D ;D ;D ), I forgot about AC/DC, love that song, Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap, that was the theme song at the job I had for twenty years and " We gotta get outta this place by The Animals, that was a long time ago, " in a galaxy, far far away  ;)

Thanks for the fun & interesting Posts, Samson.

Sandy,

Can a guy say that he enjoys ABBA's harmony too and not run the risk of being labeled?  I do not own any of their music but if I hear them on the radio usually will turn it up!  I really like any group with the great vocals.  How could I leave off REO?  One of my favorites in high school.

There's a lot of Christian Metal bands around today, some of which are huge. Killswitch Engage, Threat Signal, As I Lay Dying, Scripture, Megadeth (yes indeed, Dave Mustaine the renowned "hellraiser" is now a Christian, refusing very lucrative festival tours because of certain "demonic" bands on the bill). There are a lot more too. Some of the names of these bands may not to us be very Christian sounding, but they are reaching millions of young people with a Christian message in their lyrics that the Church never could. And you see it at their concerts. I remember back in the 70s, 80s and 90s, Metal concerts would usually be attended by kids that swore a lot, got drunk, maybe even drugs. I've been to see some of these bands and its amazing. Sure the kids still jump around, get a bit wild to the music etc, but the bars are all selling fruit juice and water, there's no drugs, no yelling of obscene language etc. Its definitely a positive move to come out of a genre of music usually associated with devil worship etc (which by and large is utterly spurious anyway).

The Bee Gees - "How Can You Mend A Broken Hip"
The Temptations - "Papa's Got A Kidney Stone"

Johnny Nash - "I Can't See Clearly Now"
Leo Sayer - "You Make Me Feel Like Napping"
Paul Simon - "Fifty Ways To Lose Your Liver"
Roberta Flack - "The First Time Ever I Forgot Your Face"
Commodores - "Once, Twice, Three Times To The Bathroom"

I actually have a Stryper cd......."To Hell With the Devil"!!!!  I really liked some of their songs back in the 80s.  Guessing the lyrics do not line up with my beliefs these days though.
